Udinese general manager Franco Collavino spoke to Sky Sport after Saturday’s events during the match against Milan, with the racist insults aimed at Mike Maignan which continue to cause discussion even today.
In the past few hours, FIFA president Gianni Infantino had had his say on the matter, explaining how from his point of view “a defeat by default for the club whose fans become the protagonists of such gestures” could be useful.
This is Collavino’s thought in response to this consideration: “The default defeat could open up other problems, especially regarding the integrity of the competitions, such decisions would have effects from a sporting point of view and there would be a risk of speculation, exposing the clubs to more violent than the curves. For me it is enough to rigorously apply the rules, there are measures that can be used, such as the removal of the responsible people. And then we need to continue to dialogue, bring the players into schools, try to transmit experiences and the values of sport by involving families too.”

(ANSA) – ROME, GEN 21 – The president of FIFA, Gianni Infantino, demanded that access to the stadium be prohibited for fans who utter “abhorrent” insults after the episodes of racism recorded in Udinese-Milan, for Serie A, and in Tottenham-Sheffield Wednesday for the Premier League.
“The events that occurred on Saturday in Udine and in September in Sheffield are totally repugnant and completely unacceptable. The players affected by the events on Saturday have my full support,” Infantino posted on social media.
The match that Milan won 3-2 the day before as a visitor to Udinese on matchday 21 of Serie A was suspended for 10 minutes after the French goalkeeper of the red and black team, Mike Maignan, and his teammates left the field of play after half an hour of play in the first half.
Maignan told referee Fabio Maresca that he heard ape sounds from Udinese fans after Englishman Ruben Loftus-Cheek opened the scoring the day before for Milan.
In turn, Wes Foderingham and his family were victims of “racism and threats” after Sheffield United’s 2-1 defeat against Tottenham in a duel on the fifth round of the Premier League played on September 16, 2023.
“There is no place for racism or other forms of discrimination, in football or in society. Saturday’s events in Udine and Sheffield are absolutely abominable and completely unacceptable,” emphasized Infantino.
“There is no place for racism or other forms of discrimination, neither in football nor in society. The players affected by what happened on Saturday have my full support,” insisted the FIFA president.
“It is necessary for all interested parties to act, starting with education in schools, so that future generations understand that this is not part of football or society,” Infantino concluded.
In this sense, Sandro Ruotolo, senator of the Democratic Party, the writer Maurizio de Giovanni and the former senator Gaetano Quagliariello signed a joint note to request the closure of the sector of the stadium where racist insults and chants are recorded.
“Defeat for the team and, we add, closure of the sector where the insults and racist chants originated. For years, insults and racist chants have been heard in our stadiums,” the note reads.
“FIFA, after what happened in Udine against Milan goalkeeper Maignan and in Sheffield, was clear: there is no place for racism or other forms of discrimination,” the text highlights.
“We think so too. The time has come for the Italian Federation and the Football League to align with FIFA.
We are tired of racist chants and insults,” say Ruotolo, De Giovanni and Quagliariello. (ANSA).

Stefano Pioli, Milan coach, commented on the Rossoneri’s 2-3 success in Udine on Sky’s microphones:
Sui racist hearts in Maignan
“He was disappointed about what happened, but I’m proud to coach a respectful, fair and proud person like Mike. It’s time to stop hearing certain things from the stadium.”
One hundredth victory in Serie A at the helm of Milan, at the end of a match where the changes were decisive
“In the first half we should have scored a few more goals, then out of nowhere we conceded two goals but we had the merit of believing in it. We knew it wouldn’t be easy but we interpreted it well and did well.”
Can Milan get back into the Scudetto race?
“We’re not thinking about April-May, we have to win a lot of games because we want to be protagonists. But we have to think about ourselves, preparing for each game as best we can.”
Leao has become more of a team player
“Definitely yes, I don’t think that the technical and tactical growth is over. The numbers say that he has become the most associative player. We have changed the way of playing, the spaces for Rafa are smaller and he is learning to move in less narrow spaces and give us solutions. Of course, he would like to score but first of all there is the good of the team.”
On the points lost in recent months
“In the direct clashes we performed less well. After the second stop we lost points but now we are growing and these victories must give us more confidence and conviction, trying to score more points than last year and try to do something more”.
Next 100 victories in Serie A always with Milan?
“Let’s hope so”.

Milan beat Paris SG 2-1 NEWS in the Champions League group stage.

Video Champions, Pioli: ‘Fantastic match, now we need continuity”
Milan heaven, Donnarumma hell. A night of great Milan, as Stefano Pioli had promised, gives the Rossoneri their first victory in the Champions League and the dream, still alive, of qualifying for the round of 16 in the nightmare group. A feat was needed, a perfect match, of pace, attention, combativeness. We needed to cage the talent of Mbappé who wandered anonymously for 90 minutes. We needed to find a network that had been missing for too long.
And two goals arrived, one by Leao – reborn – and one by Giroud – eternal -, the longest-serving Frenchman in history to score in the Champions League. Giroud and his teammates were practically perfect, carried away by their audience who this time gave them only applause. Gigio Donnarumma, on the other hand, spent a hellish evening in the cradle of that Devil who was once his friend. Thousands of banknotes were thrown at him from the Curva Sud at the start of the match and in the 10th minute of the first half. Boos and chants accompanied every play.
Milan vs Paris SG
Not an easy evening, which Skriniar tried to alleviate with a few pats on the back, but the farewell on a free transfer is a wound that Milan fans will never see heal. Perhaps Gigio has felt some emotional repercussions, even if he is not responsible for the goals conceded and in fact he has kept his goals afloat on more than one occasion, but Milan, who had not yet managed to score in this Champions League, scored two goals, one from Leao with an overhead kick and the other from the usual Giroud who headed, after running like a kid throughout the match, is always decisive. Now, with two games left in the group stage, the Rossoneri abandon last place in the standings, leaving it to Newcastle, up to five points, with PSG on 6 and Borussia on 7. Every match is decisive and everything is yet to be decided . But the message that Milan sends is clear: the Devil is there and wants to have his say. To the delight of Gerry Cardinale sitting in the stands. The Rossoneri owner enjoyed a pleasant, entertaining match with many turnovers and scoring opportunities. A far cry from that monologue that was the first match. Milan seems to have shaken off some ghosts.
Milan vs Paris SG
The air is that of the great Champions League nights, electrifying even without the ‘Pioli is on fire’ chant, a change of direction that was perhaps the right move. New stimuli and a new Milan compared to those of the last matches. Loftus-Cheek’s recovery is important even if the midfielder wastes a sensational scoring opportunity just a few minutes after kick-off. This time Milan has the right approach, reminiscent of Naples. But against PSG you can’t distract yourself for even a minute. Thus, following a corner kick, in the 9th minute, Skriniar intercepted Marquinhos’ shot and, left alone by Loftus-Cheek, scored from two steps. This time, however, Milan maintains clarity and does not give up. So after just 3′ Giroud challenges Donnarumma with a great shot and Leao pounces on the rebound and scores with an overhead kick after starting the action. A force of nature that dramatically silences the Curva Sud during the celebration. The first half then continues with chances for both sides. Maignan hypnotizes Mbappé on Dembelé’s brilliant throw. In the 27th minute the crossbar helped the Rossoneri goalkeeper again on Dembelé. At the start of the second half after just 6′, Milan found the second goal by Giroud following a brilliant assist from Theo Hernandez. Then Milan suffered just enough, remaining concentrated and orderly. The minutes pass, fired up by the bucking of Leao who has returned to being that pure talent that had disappeared for a few games. In injury time we held our breath for the attack by the Parisians. And the final whistle which is a liberation: Milan is back.

Thousands of fake banknotes thrown at Gigio Donnarumma at the start of AC Milan-PSG. The former Rossoneri goalkeeper, making his first appearance as an opponent at San Siro, started the match in the goal below the Curva Sud and was pelted with fake banknotes with his face drawn on, an initiative of the Rossoneri ultras. Rain of whistles and insults and a very difficult start to the match for Donnarumma. ‘Dollarumma, the man without honour, mercenary’: these are the words printed on the fake dollars that will be distributed by Milan’s Curva Sud to mock Gigio Donnarumma, during the match against PSG. “Today outside the gates you will find the fanzine with a wad of dollars to give him a worthy welcome back – wrote the Milan ultras -. We will collect a small donation to be allocated to a football school to never again raise people without values like this unworthy one” .

The trident with which Milan is aiming for the feat tonight in the Champions League: Leao, Giroud and Pulisic are the protagonists of the Rossoneri attack that will face PSG at San Siro. The objective must be to raise one’s head after four disappointing games and only one point won, but above all to find a goal that is still missing in Milan’s Champions League adventure and a victory that would be the only hope of still believing in qualification. In midfield Musah preferred to Krunic on the pitch with Rejinders and Loftus-Cheek. In PSG Gigio Donnarumma has to try to manage the difficult reception of the Rossoneri fans ready to tease with fake banknotes and his printed image. For the rest, Luis Enrique essentially confirms the first leg lineup with Dembélé, Kolo Muani, Mbappé in front.
The eve of Milan-Paris Saint Germain
A Champions League “crossroads”, in a match that must be the “turning point match” against the excessive power of the Arab sheik’s club, against Kylian Mbappé’s team. It’s the very complicated mission that Milan finds themselves facing, bruised and a little depressed after two black weeks in which they managed to win just one point in the last four matches. Stefano Pioli knows that much – if not all – of progressing to the next round depends on the result against PSG. But a defeat, which all things considered could also be understandable given the opponent, would bring with it important consequences and – perhaps – drastic consequences. The Rossoneri coach admits errors and shortcomings even on the eve of the Champions League, but calls the Rossoneri to redemption, to a stoic performance, to a match played with character, rhythm, hunger for victory, in short, a great performance. “It must be the turning point match in the Champions League. We must start scoring points – admits Pioli -, not just hope for favorable results in the other matches. It will be very difficult because the opponent is of the highest level. We must believe in it from start to finish.

It’s the first crossroads of the season for the Champions League but I want the Milan I know to take to the pitch.” So far Milan have never managed to win in Europe and, above all, they have not yet managed to score. They are bottom of the group with two points, preceded by Borussia and Newcastle (4 points) and indeed by leaders PSG (6). It is clear that another knockout would compromise the Rossoneri team’s adventure in the Cup. The first leg, just a handful of days ago , ended with a painful 3-0, now Milan must overturn the predictions and find the strength to get out of the tunnel they entered after the break.
Video Champions, Pioli: ‘The match against PSG must be the turning point match’
“The prevailing feeling – assures the coach – is that of revenge. On Saturday we disappointed the fans and they booed us, it means that we did badly. We have the opportunity to return to playing for Milan”. At least this time, Pioli can count on some important recoveries. Theo Hernandez – out on Saturday with a contusion – trained as a group, like Chukwueze – who shouldn’t have 90 minutes left in his legs -, Pulisic and Krunic. However, Kjaer is still unavailable and this is bad news for the changes in defence. The emergency remains but cannot be a mitigating factor. There will also be Gerry Cardinale in the stands who expects a test of character like all the fans at San Siro.
Video Champions, Milan prepares for the return match against PSG
“On Saturday against Udinese we disappointed everyone – admits Pioli – this is quite evident. We have to do everything the opposite and we have to put it on the pitch. I know I coach a responsible, attentive team with the possibility of playing a great match. How do I explain myself? this moment of crisis? We paid too much for some results like Juventus and Napoli, in which we deserved more, while against Udinese it was an insufficient performance.”
Video Champions, Maignan: ‘No emotions against PSG, we will have to give everything’
The whistles came not only for the lack of results but for Milan’s attitude. There will already be whistles from the warm-up but only for Gigio Donnarumma in his first, highly anticipated match as an opponent of the Rossoneri. On the other hand, the Milan goalkeeper also challenges his past, Maignan who grew up in the PSG youth team. “Right now there is no room for emotions, we have to give everything. We have to play like Milan, without emotions, play our football”, returning to goals and returning to winning to keep the Champions League dream alive.
