Chicago ICE Operation: ‘Midway Blitz’ Intensifies Immigration Enforcement

Operation ⁣Midway Blitz: ICE Enforcement Operations underway in Chicago

CHICAGO – U.S. ⁢Immigration ⁣and Customs Enforcement (ICE) launched‍ “Operation Midway Blitz”⁣ in Chicago on Monday, substantially increasing immigration enforcement efforts in the city and surrounding areas. The Department of ⁢Homeland Security ⁢(DHS) announced the⁣ operation, stating it will⁤ “target the criminal illegal aliens who‌ flocked to Chicago and Illinois.” DHS attributes the need ⁣for increased enforcement to Chicago and Illinois’ sanctuary laws, which ‍limit cooperation between local and state law enforcement and ICE agents. The⁢ operation follows⁣ weeks after the‌ Trump administration initially signaled plans to escalate ICE activity ⁢in Chicago.DHS has not specified the duration of Operation Midway Blitz. The department stated the mission is ⁤intended to honor ‌Katie Abraham, a Chicago woman killed in a drunk driving⁣ hit-and-run crash in Urbana, Illinois, in January. The driver involved was an undocumented immigrant from Guatemala.

Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson stated the city received no prior notification of the enhanced immigration enforcement. ⁢Illinois Governor JB Pritzker expressed similar concerns on X.com, stating, “Once again, this isn’t about fighting crime. That requires support and coordination – yet we’ve experienced⁣ nothing like that over the past several weeks.”

Immigrant rights advocates and local activists have organized protests at ICE‍ facilities in ‍the Chicago⁢ suburbs since last week, with additional demonstrations planned as the operation ⁣continues. Community organizations are actively distributing information regarding residents’ rights. The City of Chicago provides “Know Your Rights” guides in both English and⁢ Spanish, available at: https://www.chicago.gov/content/dam/city/depts/mayor/Office%20of%20New%20Americans/PDFs/ShortenedResourceGuide-English.pdf and https://www.chicago.gov/content/dam/city/depts/mayor/Office%20of%20New%20Americans/PDFs/ShortenedResourceGuide-Spanish.pdf.

ICE‌ Raids Hyundai Battery Plant in Georgia,Detaining Approximately 475 Workers

Pooler,Georgia – Federal‍ authorities detained⁣ approximately 475⁢ people⁣ Wednesday during ⁣a raid at a ⁤hyundai battery plant construction site⁤ in ⁤Pooler,Georgia, officials said. The operation, conducted by Immigration⁣ and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and other agencies, targeted workers at the site of a joint venture between Hyundai and ⁤LG Energy Solution,HL-GA Battery Company.⁣

The raid raises concerns⁤ about the impact of increased ICE enforcement ‍on the U.S. labor market and ⁣the⁢ rights of workers. It comes amid a backdrop⁣ of declining immigrant participation in the workforce, with the U.S. labor force⁢ losing more than 1.2 million immigrants between January and July, according to preliminary Census Bureau data cited by the Pew Research Center. The ⁤South Korean Ministry of Foreign Affairs ⁤has ⁢responded, urging the U.S. Embassy in Seoul ‍”to exercise extreme caution ‍to ensure that the legitimate rights and interests of Korean citizens are not infringed upon,” ‌and stating that the rights and ‍interests of Korean citizens⁣ and investment companies “must not be unfairly infringed upon during U.S. ⁤law enforcement operations.”

Georgia State Patrol troopers blocked access roads to the Hyundai site during the operation. Video posted to social ⁤media ‍showed‍ a Homeland Security investigations (HSI) agent ‌telling workers to cease construction immediately. “We’re Homeland Security. We have a search⁢ warrant for the whole site,” the ‍agent said in the video. “We need⁢ construction to ⁤cease‌ immediately. We need all work to end on the site right now.”

HL-GA Battery Company⁢ confirmed it is indeed “cooperating ⁣fully with the⁤ appropriate authorities” and paused ‍construction to assist with the investigation.⁢ HyundaiS‌ electric⁤ vehicle manufacturing plant, located nearby, was not affected, according to ⁣plant spokesperson⁣ Bianca Johnson. “This did not impact people getting to work,” Johnson said in an email. “Production⁤ and normal office hours had⁤ already ‍begun for the day” when access was shut down.

The raid is part of a broader pattern of ICE operations undertaken during the Trump administration as part of a mass deportation agenda, targeting workplaces including farms, construction sites, restaurants, and auto repair shops.

Pritzker: ICE Raids Tied to Chicago Mexican Independence Day

by Emma Walker – News Editor September 3, 2025
written by Emma Walker – News Editor

Pritzker Administration Anticipates ICE Enforcement Actions During ⁣Chicago’s⁤ mexican Independence Day

CHICAGO - Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker’s‌ administration ‌is preparing for potential Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) raids surrounding Chicago’s annual Mexican Independence Day celebrations, officials confirmed Monday. The state is coordinating with⁣ community organizations to provide legal assistance and resources ‍to residents concerned about increased immigration enforcement.

The anticipation of ICE activity comes⁢ as Chicago ‍prepares for large-scale Independence Day festivities, traditionally marked by car‌ caravans ⁢and ⁣street gatherings,⁣ particularly in⁤ the downtown area. These celebrations reflect the notable Mexican population⁢ in the city and Cook⁢ County, where‌ more than 21% of‌ Chicagoans ⁤identify as Mexican, according to U.S. Census data. Cook County holds the third-largest population ‍of Mexican immigrants and⁢ Mexican Americans ‌nationally, trailing only Los Angeles County, California, and Harris ‌County,⁢ Texas.

The governor’s office stated it⁤ received information suggesting heightened ICE enforcement ⁤plans coinciding with the holiday,a period when many members of the Mexican community ‌gather publicly to celebrate their heritage. While ICE has not publicly confirmed specific operations, the Pritzker administration is ⁤proactively working to ensure residents are ‍aware of their‍ rights and have access to ⁢legal support should they be targeted.

As ⁣the⁤ onset of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, ⁢Mexican ‍Independence Day ⁢celebrations in Chicago have become increasingly concentrated in the downtown area, drawing larger crowds and necessitating street closures. This concentration, coupled⁣ with the potential for increased ICE activity, has raised concerns‌ among community ⁢leaders⁤ and advocates. The state is directing⁤ individuals with questions or concerns about their⁣ immigration‍ status⁢ to contact the Illinois Coalition ⁤for Immigrant and Refugee Rights (ICIRR) and other⁤ legal aid organizations. Further updates will be provided as the situation develops.

Luis Alvarez, the man lauded for his bravery in rescuing a 9-year-old girl from a shark attack off the Florida coast, now faces possible deportation. The 31-year-old resident of lehigh Acres, florida, was arrested for driving without a valid license just days after the harrowing incident.

Alvarez was pulled over around 1:30 a.m. on June 14 in Collier County, approximately 140 miles northwest of Miami, after police noticed he was operating a gray SUV without headlights. The Collier County Sheriff’s Office reported that Alvarez presented a photo of his Employment authorization Card when asked for his driver’s license, admitting he had never possessed one in his two and a half years in the United States.

Currently, Alvarez is in U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) custody, with a court appearance scheduled for July 9. USA TODAY has reached out to ICE for further details regarding his detention.

Did You Know? According to the florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, there were 69 unprovoked shark bites in Florida in 2023, representing 44% of the total unprovoked bites in the U.S. and 28% worldwide.

Details of the Arrest

During the traffic stop, Alvarez reportedly told the arresting officer, in Spanish, that he had been in the U.S. for two and a half years and had never obtained a driver’s license. He was subsequently arrested and also received a warning for the headlight violation.

The arrest report identifies Alvarez as a native of Boaco, Nicaragua. Court records confirm his detainment by ICE.

Prior Arrests

While Collier County records show no prior arrests for Alvarez, similar charges of driving without a valid license appear in Lee County, dating back to December 2023. He faced multiple judges, paying fines or receiving withheld adjudication in those cases. A D6 suspension was issued on June 23, preventing him from applying for a license due to unpaid fines.

Heroic Shark Rescue

On June 11,Alvarez was present on the beach when 9-year-old Leah Lendel was attacked by a shark just feet from the shore in Boca Grande,Florida. The attack nearly severed her hand.

Thanks to swift action at the scene and rapid transport to Tampa General Hospital, surgeons successfully reattached Lendel’s hand. she is currently recovering from the ordeal.

Pro Tip: When swimming in the ocean, avoid wearing shiny jewelry, which can resemble fish scales and attract sharks.

Raynel Lugo, Lendel’s sister, recounted to Fox4 News how Alvarez bravely entered the water to scare the shark away, allowing her to assist Leah. Lugo stated that Alvarez fearlessly dove deep underwater, facing the shark head-on.

Body camera footage from a responding Lee County Sheriff’s Office deputy captured the scene, showing Alvarez and others near the water as Leah received medical attention from EMS.

Alvarez, communicating through an interpreter, described the shark to first responders as approximately eight feet long. Experts suspect it may have been a bull shark, known for its aggressive behaviour in Florida waters.

Unprovoked attacks, while less common, can result in serious injuries.
