Trump’s Immigration Crackdown Transforms Illinois Village Amid Tear Gas Fears

Broadview, Illinois demands ICE ⁢leave as Tensions escalate

Broadview,⁢ IL – A growing conflict between federal immigration authorities and local officials in Broadview, Illinois, has reached a⁢ boiling point, with Mayor Katrina⁤ Thompson and other leaders demanding the removal ⁢of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) from the⁣ Chicago suburb. The dispute‌ centers around ICE’s “Operation Midway Blitz,” a heightened enforcement effort in the Chicago area, and has been marked by protests, arrests, and accusations of misconduct.

Federal agents and protesters clashed outside an ICE facility⁤ in Broadview on September 29, 2025, as seen in images captured by Michael Loria of USA TODAY. (Images with aspect ratios 4:3 and 3:4 available here and here).

Department of Homeland Security officials maintain that immigration agents are operating appropriately⁣ under tough circumstances. Though, mayor Thompson and Broadview Police Chief Thomas Mills have accused ‍ICE of overreach and⁤ initiated a criminal ⁢investigation into⁢ federal agents in connection with two alleged hit-and-run incidents and‍ damage to a news reporter’s vehicle.

“These rioters are laying siege and interfering‍ with ‍legitimate law enforcement operations,” Immigration and Customs Enforcement Acting Director Todd Lyons said in a letter addressed to Thompson. “Failure⁣ to provide relief makes you a party to the obstruction of justice. There will be no change in our operational posture ‌until these‌ unlawful activities cease. The only siege in Broadview is the one being waged against the United States government.”

According to Homeland Security officials, 34 people have been arrested in connection with the‍ protests, including three individuals found to be carrying loaded firearms. Further‍ details regarding the arrests are currently‍ unavailable.

Agency officials⁣ have distanced themselves from the criminal allegations leveled by Broadview police, calling⁢ the investigation “bogus” and “political theater.”⁢

“Less than a week⁤ after a terrorist attack at an ICE facility in Dallas,” said agency spokesperson Emily Covington, “Mayor Katrina Thompson, Broadview⁣ Police Chief Thomas Mills, and acting Fire Chief Matt Martin ⁤chose to smear ICE and launch a‌ bogus criminal‍ investigation into our brave ICE law enforcement. It’s disheartening that even after the terrorist attack and arrests of rioters with guns outside the Broadview ICE facility, these sanctuary politicians ⁣chose to engage in political theatre ‍to⁤ inflame hatred of ICE.”

Federal agents have deployed chemical agents, including pepper spray and tear gas, to disperse protesters blocking immigration enforcement vehicles. On September 26, agents reportedly used these agents against protesters and journalists positioned ⁣on a road leading to the ICE facility located at ⁣1930 Beach Street in Broadview.

The situation unfolds as ICE enforcement continues largely uninterrupted during the ongoing government shutdown, according to DHS.

Illinois Governor Warns of Power Grab as DHS Requests National Guard for Chicago Immigration Crackdown

ICE Requests National Guard support in Chicago Following Arrests, Sparking Concerns of Overreach

CHICAGO – U.S.Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has requested National Guard troops be deployed to Chicago amid heightened tensions following a series of high-profile immigration enforcement operations, dubbed the “Midway Blitz,” and allegations of aggressive tactics by⁤ federal agents.‍ The request comes as Illinois governor JB Pritzker and local advocates accuse ICE of targeting innocent community members and‍ escalating fears within immigrant neighborhoods.

The recent ICE operations have resulted in numerous⁣ arrests throughout the Chicago area. DHS officials maintain the operations are focused on detaining individuals with criminal records, citing arrests of individuals accused of crimes ⁢including sexual abuse of a child, domestic violence, and battery. ⁤

However, community members⁣ and Governor Pritzker dispute this claim. “They’re not ⁢targeting violent criminals or gang ⁢members,” Pritzker stated.”They’re targeting tamale vendors.”

Examples cited by supporters include the detention of Laura Murillo, a ⁤well-known tamale vendor on Chicago’s South Side, who was‍ detained⁢ on September 25. The September 12 fatal shooting of Silverio‌ Villegas González, a Mexican immigrant,‍ by an immigration agent ‌after dropping his sons off at school has further fueled outrage.

Concerns have also been raised regarding the tactics employed by federal agents. The Broadview ⁢Police Department is investigating reports⁣ of federal agents firing crowd control weapons at a⁢ news reporter’s vehicle. Homeland Security officials have‍ not responded to repeated ‍requests for comment regarding the inquiry.

Eréndira Rendon, a prominent Chicago-area immigration advocate and native of Mexico, expressed the fear felt within the community. “If ⁤you look like me,⁢ you are in danger,” Rendon said, breaking down in tears while reading a ‍list of names of those ⁤detained by immigration agents on September 29. ‍”DHS terrorizes our communities and showcases our pain on social media.”

Data from‍ the cato Institute, a libertarian think tank, indicates that in fiscal⁢ year 2025, 65% of immigration detainees have no criminal convictions, and 93% have no violent convictions.

The request for National Guard support has intensified the debate ⁣over ICE’s tactics and the scope of its authority, raising questions about the balance ‍between national‌ security and the rights of immigrant ⁣communities.

Immigration enforcement tactics escalate in Chicago

National Guard Deployment to Chicago Sparks Immigration Concerns

CHICAGO – The⁢ deployment of the Illinois National Guard to Chicago to assist local law enforcement has ignited fears among immigrant⁤ communities that increased military presence will lead ⁤to heightened immigration enforcement, even for individuals not suspected of criminal activity. ⁣The move, announced‌ as part⁤ of a broader effort to⁣ combat⁢ rising crime, ‍is‍ drawing criticism from advocacy⁤ groups who worry about the chilling effect on access to‌ essential services.

the concerns stem from ⁣the potential for collaboration between National Guard personnel and federal immigration authorities, raising ⁢the specter of⁣ expanded immigration checks. Community organizers report ⁤anxieties among residents, including Latinos, that any⁣ interaction ⁢with authorities – seeking medical care, reporting ⁤crimes, or accessing social services – could⁣ result in ‌detention or deportation, irrespective of immigration status. “We know the presence of the National Guard will lead to our⁢ neighbors being afraid⁤ to seek help⁤ when they ‍need medical care, need to report crimes, or require social services, because⁢ of⁤ this military presence,” said Sandra⁣ Pita, a community organizer.

The deployment comes as Chicago grapples with persistent concerns over violent crime, though city officials have ⁣recently noted decreases in⁣ some categories. While the specifics of the National Guard’s role remain under discussion, the broader trend of⁢ utilizing military resources for domestic law enforcement is gaining traction⁤ nationwide. Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry recently requested a similar National Guard⁣ deployment to New Orleans and other cities, praising President ‍Biden’s decision to send ⁢troops to Washington D.C.and Memphis to address crime.

The situation in Chicago reflects ‌a growing‍ debate ‍over the appropriate role ⁣of the military in civilian policing and the potential ⁤consequences for vulnerable populations.Advocates are calling for clear assurances ⁤that‍ national Guard personnel will not be involved ‍in immigration⁢ enforcement activities and that community trust will be prioritized. The long-term impact of the deployment on Chicago’s immigrant communities remains to be seen.

Title: Trump to Send Troops to Portland; Cities Back Legal Fight

by David Harrison – Chief Editor September 29, 2025
written by David Harrison – Chief Editor

Los ⁤Angeles, CA – A federal judge has blocked the ‌Trump administration from deploying federal troops to ‌California for crowd control purposes,⁢ finding⁣ the actions likely violated the Posse⁢ Comitatus Act. The ruling, ‍issued after a ⁢challenge brought by the state of California, details concerns ⁤over the ‌administration’s lack of ‍coordination with state and local‍ law enforcement and the potential for creating⁢ a “national police force.”

U.S.District Judge Dolly gee found that ⁢federal ⁤troops deployed ⁢to Los Angeles in June engaged in crowd⁤ control and established traffic blockades, ⁣actions reserved for ⁢state and local authorities. Los Angeles police and ⁢sheriff’s officials ‌were given “mere two ⁤hours’ notice” before federal operations began.

Judge Gee emphasized ⁣the historical context surrounding the domestic use⁢ of military troops, referencing‍ public resentment stemming from the presence of British troops in the colonies and the Boston Massacre. She also cited Alexander Hamilton’s writings in The Federalist ‍Papers, ⁤which asserted that the power to raise armies should reside with the⁢ legislature, not the executive branch.

The ruling noted⁤ that defense Secretary Pete Hegseth authorized the deployment of 4,000 federalized‍ national ⁣Guard troops⁤ and 700 marines to Los Angeles in June, with⁤ 300⁤ National Guard members ⁢still present as of the ruling.

The judge ⁣specifically‍ barred the government from future⁤ violations of federal law in California, citing Trump’s stated intention to deploy National Guard troops to other cities⁤ and the ‌”ongoing risk” of unlawful‍ action.

Notably, the challenge to federal troop deployment predates the ⁣focus on ‌Portland,‍ Oregon. Days before turning attention to ⁢Portland, the Trump administration was already facing legal opposition to its⁤ troop deployment strategy ⁢in California.

ICE Job Fair Draws Protests, Expansion Plans Spark Concerns

ICE Seeking Large‌ office Spaces in Oklahoma City, Multiple Other States

OKLAHOMA CITY -‌ Sept. 27, 2025 – U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) is seeking to lease ⁣ample office space in Oklahoma City and⁤ a dozen other major U.S.⁣ cities, according to⁤ a federal contract listing posted Sept. 11 ⁤by the General services Administration (GSA). The search encompasses “as-is, fully-finished and furnished office space”⁤ in⁤ Alabama, Idaho, North Carolina, South Carolina, Ohio, Iowa,⁤ florida,⁢ Kentucky, Missouri, Pennsylvania, Washington,‌ Wisconsin and Virginia, in addition to Oklahoma.

The⁤ government requires approximately 70 workstations and desks, a dedicated server room, ‌and a high level of security at the‍ leased locations. The proposed lease term is⁢ 10 years. ‍The listing explicitly states the government will not consider spaces shared wiht ‍tenants “whose primary clientele‍ or operations could present security,⁤ operational or ⁢reputational conflicts with law enforcement functions.”

The search for new office space comes as ICE has considerably increased its activity and funding under the current administration. A Sept.18 article in The Washington Post reported officials stating ICE ‍needed support for 10,000 new employees nationwide.

While GSA has not directly confirmed the office space proposals are⁢ specifically for ICE, a spokesman stated the agency would⁤ investigate the inquiry from The Oklahoman. In a statement⁢ shared with both The Oklahoman and KOCO 5 News, GSA affirmed its commitment ⁣to ‌supporting federal agencies’ workspace needs.

“GSA remains focused on supporting ⁤this administration’s goal of optimizing the federal footprint and providing the best workplaces for our federal‍ agencies to meet their mission,” the statement read.

Interested‌ parties can find details of the⁣ contract⁢ opportunity at https://sam.gov/workspace/contract/opp/ebd754f4b51745d2bfa69f55c88e1387/view.

Bondi Orders DOJ to Protect ICE, Investigate Attacks

by Emma Walker – News Editor September 27, 2025
written by Emma Walker – News Editor

Bondi ‍to Deploy DOJ Agents ⁢to protect ICE Facilities Amid Rising attacks

WASHINGTON – Attorney ⁣General Pam Bondi announced Friday the ⁢Department of⁢ Justice will deploy agents to ⁢protect Immigration and ⁢Customs Enforcement (ICE) facilities nationwide, responding to what she described as ‍a surge ‍in attacks against ICE ‍personnel and facilities constituting “domestic terrorism.” Bondi stated the Department will pursue‍ the “most serious available charges” against those‌ involved in criminal activity, including conspiracy, ⁢assault, civil disorder, and terrorism offenses.

The move follows⁢ a presidential memo signed‍ Thursday directing investigations into “political‌ violence and intimidation,” to be led by the FBI’s Joint Terrorism Task Forces. The White House cited the recent ‌assassination of‌ conservative‍ activist Charlie Kirk, last year’s assassination attempts against⁢ President Trump, and an increase in attacks on ICE officers⁤ as justification for the new strategy.

President Trump also signed an executive order labeling antifa a domestic terrorist ‍organization, though the legal implications of this designation remain unclear. Antifa is a decentralized movement‍ of largely left-wing activists, lacking a formal leadership structure. Importantly, “domestic terrorism” is not currently ⁢a chargeable offense under federal law, and the ‍government does not ⁢maintain an official‍ list of domestic terrorist ⁤groups, unlike ‍its ⁤approach to foreign terrorist organizations.

Bondi will work with the FBI and state ⁤and local police to investigate these incidents.
