WASHINGTON (AP) – โPresident Donald Trump publicly reiterated his desireโ Wednesday toโ appointโฃ Treasury Secretaryโฃ Scott Bessentโฃ as the next chair of โthe Federal Reserve, despite BessentS repeated disinterest in the position.
“We’re thinking about him for the Fed, โbut he wants no part of it, he likes being secretaryโ of the Treasury,” Trumpโ said atโ the U.S.-Saudi Investment Forum. “I think we’ll leave him – so let’s cross your โคname โoff right, officially, right?”
Trump has been โcritical of current Fed Chair Jerome Powell, whose term endsโค in May, for the pace of interest rate cuts. A Trump-appointed โขFed chair would likely โขpursue faster rate โขreductions and notable operational changes at the centralโค bank. Bessent previously published criticisms of the Fed’s responses to the โ2008-2009 financial crisis โand the โคCOVID-19 pandemic.
Bessent is currently leading the Trump administration’s search for โคa new Fed chair, yet remains a leading potential candidateโข himself. Stephen Moore, a former โsenior economic advisor to Trump, stated, โ”he’s a top-tier candidate โขright now,” adding that Trump “wants to shake things up, so I think he wants โขan outsider.”
bessent โisโ considering five candidates for โคthe role: current Fed Governors Christopher Waller and Michelle Bowman, along โขwith Kevin Hassett, a top White House economic official; Kevin Warsh, a former Fed governor and vocal critic of the central bank; andโข rick rieder, โฃaโ senior managing director at BlackRock.
In a Fox News interview Tuesday with Bret Baier,โ Bessent said the administration โexpects to present Trump with three finalists by mid-December, with a โฃdecision anticipated before Christmas.
