Immigration Detainees Sue Over Alleged ‘Filthy’ Conditions at ICE Facility

Lawsuit Alleges Deplorable Conditions at Illinois ICE Facility

BROADVIEW, Ill. ⁢ – A lawsuit filed Thursday alleges severe mistreatment and inhumane conditions at‌ an immigration and ⁤Customs Enforcement (ICE) facility in ⁤Broadview, Illinois, with⁤ detainees claiming they are being “warehoused” for days‌ without adequate‌ food, water,‌ medical care, or sanitation.

The suit details ‌allegations of overcrowding, with ‌dozens ⁣of people reportedly sleeping on plastic chairs or concrete floors for weeks. Detainees are⁤ allegedly denied access to menstrual products and clean clothing, and bathrooms lack privacy, ⁢exposing both ⁢men and women while using‍ the ‌toilet. Temperatures ⁣within‌ the facility are described as‍ extreme, ‌with limited access to blankets or warm clothing. The‍ lawsuit ⁢further claims detainees are not receiving medical screenings and are ⁣being denied access to prescription⁤ medications brought by family members.

These claims echo concerns previously raised by experts, as⁣ reported‌ by USA TODAY.

According to the lawsuit,‌ immigration authorities are currently holding people at ⁣the Broadview ⁣facility‌ “for days on end.”

South Dakota Governor Kristi Noem’s spokesperson,⁤ Ian McLaughlin,⁣ vehemently denied the allegations, stating, “Any claims there are⁣ subprime⁣ conditions at the ‌Broadview ICE⁤ facility are false.” McLaughlin asserted that ‌adequate food, water, privacy, and medical care ⁣are provided, and that detainees ⁢have access to communication with family and legal counsel. He also stated the facility ⁤is not intended for ⁤long-term detention.

“Some of⁤ the worst of the worst including pedophiles, ⁣gang ‌members,⁤ and rapists have been processed through the facility in recent weeks,” McLaughlin added. “The ACLU should ‌just change its name. it’s ‌clear they only‌ care about criminal ‌illegal ⁢aliens-not Americans.”

The American⁢ Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) is representing the plaintiffs in the lawsuit.

This case comes amid⁢ ongoing scrutiny of ICE detention centers ‌and immigration ‍enforcement practices. In a related⁣ incident, U.S. Congressional candidate Kat Abughazaleh was recently indicted for her involvement in protests against ICE in Chicago, according to a USA TODAY ⁢report from October 29, 2025.

Republicans send Biden autopen report to the Justice Department

by Emma Walker – News Editor October 28, 2025
written by Emma Walker – News Editor

WASHINGTON (AP) – ⁣ House Republicans on Thursday formally sent a report too the Justice Department alleging a ⁢”cover-up” of President Biden’s ⁢cognitive ‍state and questioning the validity of executive actions signed via autopen. the report, the culmination of a months-long investigation, alleges White House staff ⁤concealed Biden’s alleged decline and calls for further scrutiny of Biden’s doctor, Kevin O’Connor, ⁤and⁢ senior ⁣aides Anthony Bernal and ⁣Annie Tomasini, all of whom invoked their Fifth Amendment rights⁣ during testimony.

The report draws heavily on publicly available data, including polls regarding Biden’s approval rating and perceptions of his public speaking and⁤ age.It claims White House‍ record-keeping ‍was “so lax that the chain ⁢of ⁤custody for a given decision is tough or impractical to establish,” but does not provide specific examples of⁤ policy violations or decisions made without Biden’s awareness.

Republicans are demanding the Justice department investigate O’Connor, Bernal, and Tomasini. They‌ also sent a letter to the D.C. Board of Medicine requesting potential disciplinary action against O’Connor, including possible ‌revocation of ‍his medical license.

A ‍central contention of the report is that executive⁣ actions signed using an autopen should‍ be considered invalid without documented ‍proof of Biden’s direct approval. “Barring evidence of executive actions taken during the Biden presidency showing that ⁤President ⁢Biden indeed took a‍ particular executive action, the committee‍ deems those actions taken ⁢thru use of the autopen as void,”‍ the ‍report ⁣states.

Democrats and legal experts have cautioned that broad scrutiny of executive actions could⁣ create legal challenges for both‌ the Trump governance and‌ congressional Republicans, who have also utilized autopens for policy implementation. The⁢ report‌ does not include full transcripts of witness testimony.

According to the report, the White House staff “organized one of‍ the largest scandals in American history – hiding a cognitively failing president ‍and refusing any means of confirmation of such demise.”

Arizona‍ Authorities Investigate Alleged Illegal Gambling Ring Linked to ⁢Casinos

PHOENIX – Arizona Department‍ of Gaming (ADG) officials confirmed today ⁣they are investigating “Operation⁤ Royal Flush,” an alleged illegal gambling ring with ⁤potential ties to several state casinos. the inquiry, details of which remain largely confidential, comes amid growing concerns about the expansion of sports betting and it’s impact on problem gambling within the state.

Arizona’s long history with gambling has been⁣ marked by debate over⁢ its potential for corruption. A counselor with ⁣the National Council ⁢on Problem Gambling helpline,⁤ identified‌ only ‌as Sarah, has witnessed firsthand the financial devastation gambling can inflict. “Most of the⁢ people who⁤ call…are men who got in over their heads betting tens of thousands of dollars with money they didn’t have,” she said. “They often jeopardize their⁢ jobs⁤ or houses ‍through gambling. What are they doing to try⁤ and keep you ⁣coming⁢ back?…They’re not ⁢being generous, these casinos and these apps aren’t charities.”

Currently, 16 of Arizona’s 22 federally recognized Indigenous ⁣tribes operate⁣ casinos, contributing substantially to state revenue. According to the ADG’s fiscal year 2025 report, 88%⁢ of casino winnings from⁤ Indigenous communities flow into the Arizona Benefits Fund, which has provided over $2.3 billion as 2003 for ‌education, emergency preparedness, and wildlife conservation.

however, the ‍increasing accessibility of gambling, ⁢notably through mobile sports betting,‍ is raising alarm bells. A February study from UC san Diego Today revealed a surge in gambling addiction following the legalization of sports betting.‍ Total sports wagers jumped from $4.9 billion in 2017 to $121.1 billion in 2023, with 94% of⁢ those wagers‌ placed ⁢online.

The ADG reported 124 serious ‌incidents related to gambling⁣ in fiscal year 2024, and Director Jackie Johnson stated the department ‌is actively‌ safeguarding patrons and enforcing regulations against ⁤unlawful operations. The‌ current investigation,”Operation Royal flush,” represents a significant escalation in these enforcement efforts.

Arizona legalized sports betting in 2021.The ⁣state’s gambling laws are complex, encompassing tribal gaming compacts, state-regulated casinos, and online sports ⁢betting platforms. The ADG is responsible⁢ for overseeing all forms of legal‍ gambling⁤ within the state and ensuring compliance with relevant regulations.

Further details regarding “Operation royal Flush” are expected to be released as the investigation progresses.

DOJ will send election monitors to two Democratic states, California and New Jersey

by Emma Walker – News Editor October 24, 2025
written by Emma Walker – News Editor

WASHINGTON (AP) – The ‍Department⁣ of Justice announced it will deploy election monitors to California adn⁢ New Jersey for the upcoming elections, a move raising questions about potential federal oversight in traditionally Democratic strongholds. The decision comes as the DOJ, under the‌ leadership ⁣of Attorney General Merrick Garland, emphasizes its commitment to ensuring fair and secure ‍elections nationwide.

This deployment marks a shift in⁣ focus for the Civil Rights Division, typically involved in monitoring elections in areas with a⁤ history of voter suppression or concerns about election integrity. While the DOJ has not specified ‍the reasons for targeting these particular states, the ⁢move arrives amid continued, though unsubstantiated, claims⁤ of election fraud ⁣stemming from the 2020 ⁣presidential election. Former‌ President donald Trump continues to falsely assert that Joe Biden’s victory ⁢was rigged, despite numerous studies finding no evidence of widespread‌ fraud.

The DOJ’s effort ⁣will⁣ be overseen⁤ by the Civil ‍Rights Division, deploying personnel ⁢in coordination with U.S. attorney’s⁤ offices and working closely with state and⁣ local officials.⁢ The department is also soliciting requests for monitoring in other jurisdictions.

David Becker,‍ a former DOJ attorney and election monitor, explained ⁢that these monitors ‌are typically department lawyers ⁣prohibited from interfering at polling places. He‍ noted that local jurisdictions usually consent ⁢to the⁢ monitors’ presence, warning that attempting to send ⁤them without a⁣ clear legal basis or local approval “could result in chaos.”

Earlier this year, Trump ⁣pledged to⁢ ban vote-by-mail nationwide, a move he ⁤has no‌ constitutional authority ⁣to ⁢enact. ⁤The DOJ’s increased ‌monitoring efforts ⁢come ⁢as election security remains a prominent issue in the political landscape.

Title: Trump Claims Final Say on Potential Federal Payments in Investigations

by Priya Shah – Business Editor October 22, 2025

Trump Claims⁢ He Would Decide How to‍ Use‌ Funds From ⁤potential Federal Settlements

WASHINGTON – Former President‌ Donald ⁤Trump indicated he⁣ would have ultimate⁢ control over any funds he receives through ⁤claims filed⁤ with the ⁢Justice Department⁢ seeking damages related to investigations‌ he deems politically motivated. Trump revealed his interest in “compensation” during ⁣a recent White House appearance with attorney Todd‍ Blanche, former FBI Director‍ Kash Patel, and Attorney General Pam ⁢Bondi.

The claims, filed as part of a process to resolve federal complaints without litigation, include one seeking damages over the search ‍of his Mar-a-Lago estate and the subsequent case alleging mishandling of classified documents. The other relates to the long-concluded Trump-Russia investigation.Trump described a ⁣hypothetical scenario ‌where he would negotiate ‍a⁢ settlement amount while facing ⁢a lawsuit as president, stating, “I’ll say, ‘Give me X‌ dollars,’ and I don’t know what to do with the lawsuit.”

One administrative claim, filed‌ in August 2024, alleges a “malicious prosecution” by the Biden administration, claiming Trump spent “tens of millions of dollars” defending himself. This claim stems ‍from the‍ investigation led by Special Counsel Jack Smith, which was paused in November due to Department of Justice policy ‍against indicting a sitting president.

The Justice Department stated that all officials adhere‌ to guidance from career ethics ‌officials. A‍ White House spokesperson deferred comment to the Justice Department. Notably, Todd Blanche has been appointed as the deputy attorney general at the Justice department, and Stanley Woodward, ⁢the current associate attorney ‌general, previously ⁣represented Trump’s co-defendant in the classified documents case, Walt Nauta.

New York AG Letitia James indicted on fraud charge

New York Attorney General Letitia James Indicted on Fraud Charge

Washington D.C. – New York ⁢Attorney General Letitia James has been indicted on a fraud charge, the ⁢Justice Department⁢ announced today. The charges stem from allegations of intentional criminal acts and breaches of public trust, according to a statement released by the department, which affirmed its commitment⁤ to following the facts⁤ and ⁣the law to ⁣ensure‍ justice is served.

The indictment arrives amid heightened political tensions, with former President Donald Trump having repeatedly⁤ called for James’s prosecution for months, publicly stating she was‍ “guilty as hell” and “guilty of something” without providing evidence. The Justice‌ Department is simultaneously investigating federal Reserve Board member Lisa Cook and Senator ⁤Adam ⁣Schiff (D-Calif.) on separate allegations, which their representatives⁤ have dismissed as false and debunked.

James is a particularly visible target due‌ to her repeated legal challenges against ⁢Trump and his administration. As New York Attorney General, she filed dozens of lawsuits against the ‍former president. Last year, she secured a meaningful judgment against Trump and his companies, alleging they defrauded banks by inflating the‌ value of‍ his real estate holdings. While an appeals court overturned the original fine of over ‍$500 ‍million (including interest), it upheld the lower court’s finding that Trump had committed fraud.⁢

The indictment against James follows a day after former⁣ FBI Director James Comey made his first court appearance in ⁢a case accusing him of lying to ⁢Congress in 2020.Comey’s legal team intends to seek dismissal of the charges, arguing the⁤ prosecution is politically motivated and directed by the president.
