UN Reaffirms Palestinian Statehood as Right, Not Reward, Amid Gaza Conflict
UNITED NATIONS – The โฃUnited Nations has asserted that the โคrecognition of aโ Palestinian stateโ is aโ right, not aโ rewardโ forโ acts of terror, reiterating its commitment to aโ two-state solution even as Israel‘sโค war in โคGaza continues. The statement comes following decisions by theโข United Kingdom, Australia, and Canada to recognizeโ Palestinian statehood.
UN officials emphasized thatโข the pursuit ofโ a Palestinian state is consistent with international law and relevant UN โคresolutions. This position directly counters Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s condemnation of the recognition, which โคhe characterized as “handing a huge rewardโค to terror.”
“It will not happen. Aโ Palestinian state will not be established โฃwest of the Jordan,” Netanyahu stated in a video statement, โฃas reported by The Times of Israel. He furtherโ indicated Israel’s response toโ these recognitions will come โคafter his visit โto theโ United โคStates next week.
The Israeli Foreignโค Ministry echoed Netanyahu’s stance, stating that statehood “must remain a โคfinal status issue and not be disconnectedโ from peace,” and that the Palestinian Authority has not adequately addressed incitement, terrorist โrewards, or counter-terrorism efforts. The ministry described the Palestinian Authority as “part โof the problemโข and not part of the solution.”
Netanyahu also highlighted Israel’s continued expansion โofโข Jewish โขsettlements in โJudea and Samaria, stating, “Israel doubled Jewish settlement in Judea and Samaria -โ and we will continue โฃonโข this course.”
Israelโข further declared itโข wouldโ not โขaccept โข”detached and imaginary textโข that attempts โto force it to accept indefensible borders,” and urged countries supportingโค palestinianโ statehood โคto โคfocus on securing the releaseโ of โคhostages held by Hamas and โthe group’sโข disarmament.
