“Bewusst Gesundheit” – November 29, 2025 – Program Overview
Join Christine Reiler this Saturday, November 29, 2025, at 5:30 p.m. on ORF 2 and ORF ON for a comprehensive look at health and wellbeing in “Bewusst Gesundheit.” This week’s program features insights into preventing and managing common ailments, boosting your winter nutrition, and addressing the impact of modern work habits.
Shingles – The Result of a Childhood Illness
The recent launch of Austria’s free shingles vaccination program saw immediate high demand, reflecting the meaningful pain and potential complications associated with the disease. The risk of developing herpes zoster, commonly known as shingles, increases after age 50,and recent findings indicate a COVID-19 infection can further elevate this risk, particularly for women over 65. Former ORF presenter Martina Rupp shares her personal experience with shingles, detailing the debilitating pain and six-week course of strong painkillers required to manage the virus. Thankfully, Rupp is now recovered and actively raising awareness about the importance of prevention. (Design: Steffi Zupan)
Studio Talk: Free Vaccination Program – The Run on the Shingles Vaccination
As of November 2025, Austrians aged 60 and over, along with specific risk groups, can now receive free vaccinations against shingles (herpes zoster) and pneumococci. This expanded program aims to provide better protection for older adults and individuals with compromised immune systems. The program addresses the fact that the varicella-zoster virus, responsible for chickenpox, remains dormant in the body after initial infection and can reactivate as shingles when immunity weakens. Prim. Univ.-Doz. Dr. Robert Müllegger, specialist in skin and venereal diseases and head of the department of dermatology at the Wiener Neustadt Regional Hospital, will explain how the vaccination offers a high level of long-term protection, especially crucial for older populations.
“Mouse Hand” – When Everyday Work Becomes a Burden
Prolonged computer use – in the office, at home, or during leisure time – is now commonplace, but it carries an frequently enough-underestimated risk of health problems. “Mouse hand,” a common condition, manifests as pain in the wrist, forearm, elbow, or shoulder, accompanied by numbness and limited mobility. The primary causes are poor ergonomics, insufficient breaks, and sustained tense posture.Individuals working in fixed positions for extended periods without regular movement are particularly vulnerable. The program will highlight preventative measures, including targeted exercises and the use of ergonomic aids like desk pads and specialized computer mice. “Consciously Healthy” Tip on the Subject of Lumbago
That sudden, sharp pain in the lower back – often triggered by a simple movement or tension – is all too familiar. Lumbago, the medical term for lower back pain, can strike unexpectedly, causing stiffness and a feeling of being “blocked.” Contributing factors include a lack of physical activity and poor posture. Univ. Prof.Dr. Siegfried Meryn will offer practical advice on managing and alleviating lumbago.
Sprouts – Little Nutrient Bombs for the Winter
Boost your winter health with sprouts! These fresh, crunchy plants – including radish, mung bean, and grain seedlings – are packed with vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, and protein. Even a small serving provides valuable nutrients to strengthen the immune system, enhance metabolism, and increase energy levels. Nutritionist Gabriele Homolka will demonstrate how easy it is to grow sprouts at home, discuss the most digestible varieties, and provide guidance on proper planning. (Design: Vroni Brix)
