Trump Eyes Iran Regime Change, Sends Second Carrier to West Asia

U.S. President Donald Trump on Friday confirmed the impending deployment of a second aircraft carrier strike group to the Middle East, as diplomatic efforts to curb Iran’s nuclear program remain stalled and tensions escalate. The announcement came after a meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who traveled to Washington D.C. Earlier than scheduled following recent U.S.-Iran talks in Oman.

The second carrier, identified as the USS Gerald R. Ford, is currently in the Caribbean and will soon join the USS Abraham Lincoln already stationed in the Arabian Sea, approximately 500 kilometers off Iran’s coast. This marks a significant increase in the U.S. Military presence in the region, mirroring the situation in June 2025 when two carriers were deployed during a 12-day conflict with Iran, according to officials.

During a press briefing, Trump stated he “insisted that negotiations with Iran continue,” but also reiterated his willingness to take action if a deal is not reached. He alluded to the human cost of past conflicts, stating, “We’ve lost a lot of lives while they talk. Legs blown off, arms blown off, faces blown off. We’ve been going on for a long time. So, let’s see what happens.”

Netanyahu, during his sixth visit to the U.S. Since Trump’s return to office, reportedly pressed for a comprehensive agreement that would not only address Iran’s uranium enrichment but also its ballistic missile program and support for groups like Hamas and Hezbollah. Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian has indicated a willingness to discuss its nuclear program in exchange for sanctions relief, but has rejected broader demands.

The U.S. Military buildup extends beyond the carrier strike groups. The Pentagon has deployed guided missile destroyers and combat ships to key waterways, including the Persian Gulf, Red Sea, Strait of Hormuz, and Mediterranean Sea. Approximately 35 F-15E Strike Eagles have been moved to Muwaffaq Salti Air Base in Jordan, alongside tanker aircraft to Al Udeid Air Base in Qatar, and A-10 and MQ-9 drones, as well as electronic warfare aircraft. Enhanced air defense systems, including THAAD and Patriot, have been deployed to protect U.S. Bases in Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Bahrain, and Jordan. The total number of U.S. Troops in the region currently stands at approximately 50,000, with an anticipated increase of 5,000 upon the arrival of the USS Gerald R. Ford.

Iran has responded to the escalating tensions by emphasizing its readiness for “fair and equitable” talks, while rejecting what it calls coercion. President Pezeshkian has affirmed Iran’s commitment to not developing nuclear weapons and offered to allow international verification of its nuclear facilities. But, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps has conducted live drills in the Persian Gulf, and the Iranian government mobilized large crowds on February 11th, the anniversary of the Islamic Revolution, to demonstrate domestic support.

Iranian security officials have warned that even a limited U.S. Strike could trigger a wider regional conflict. Trump, while appearing to favor a swift resolution, has not ruled out military action. Iran, recalling the U.S. Bombing in June 2025 while still engaged in negotiations, seeks a deal that respects its core interests and has cautioned against further attacks.

The U.S. And Israel continue to seek maximum concessions from Iran, while Tehran maintains its position and warns of the potential consequences of military intervention. Diplomatic efforts are ongoing, but the situation remains highly volatile, with both sides signaling a willingness to escalate if their demands are not met.
