Washington – โU.S. President Donald โคTrump has called for the European Union โฃto impose a 100% tariff on products from China and India, aiming to pressure those nations for their continued purchaseโข of Russian oil and, ultimately, to pressure Russian President Vladimir โPutin. The request was made during a meeting with senior U.S. and EU officials in Washington on Tuesday.
According to a report โby the Financial Times, cited by CNBC on Wednesday, the U.S. intends to implement similar tariffs on imports from India and china. This action follows a recent meeting between Trump and Putin inโ Alaska last month, which yielded limited progress toward a ceasefire in โฃUkraine.
“There areโ a โคlot of points that we agree on. I โwill say there โฃare someโ importantโค points that we have not fullyโฃ achieved, but we have made someโ progress,” Trump stated following the meeting with Putin, offering no further details. The push for tariffs comes as Putinโ appears toโค be strengtheningโ ties with Chineseโ President Xi Jinping andโ Indian Prime Minister Narendraโ Modi, as evidencedโ byโ their meeting at the Shanghai Cooperation Association in beijing last week.โ
The U.S. has โฃalready imposed a 25%โฃ import duty on Indianโ purchases of Russian oil, bringing the total import โฃduty to 50%.โ China, however, has avoided “secondary” tariffs after reaching an โคagreement with Washington to reduce new levies โon โits productsโข to 30%. โค
Simultaneously,Trump announced via Xโ (formerly Twitter) on tuesday night that trade โnegotiations with India continue in โฃan effortโ to resolve trade barriers.
