A traditional overnight train service connecting Santiago and La Araucanía has resumed operations this year as part of the “Summer on Rails” initiative. The service, which began running on Friday, January 9th, aims to provide a comfortable and scenic travel alternative to road transport, allowing passengers to experience the Chilean south by rail.
The train covers sections of the Biobío and La Araucanía regions, offering overnight travel with the promise of unique landscapes. A highlight of the journey is the crossing of the Malleco Viaduct at dawn, a structure standing over 100 meters high, considered a key attraction for passengers.
Passengers have several seating options to choose from, catering to different budgets and preferences. The “Turista” class offers the most economical option. “Súper Salón” provides reclining and rotating seats, even as the “Clase Preferente” offers enhanced comfort with seats that recline up to 140 degrees, along with power outlets, blankets, and pillows.
Ticket prices range approximately from $25,900 to $46,900 Chilean pesos, depending on the class selected. A 20% discount is applied to those purchasing round-trip tickets.
The train features a dining car, designed to enhance the overnight travel experience and integrate the journey itself as part of the tourism offering. According to the railway company, the service is intended to be more than just a means of transportation, but a way to experience the landscapes, history, and unique atmosphere of southern Chile.
