The Guangzhou-Shenzhen railway, with a total length of 147 kilometers (91 miles), first opened on October 8, 1911. It is currently operated by China Railway Guangzhou Group and the Guangshen Railway Company. The line features both quadruple-track sections operating at speeds up to 200 km/h (120 mph) and double-track sections with a maximum speed of 160 km/h (99 mph).

Travel times vary depending on the specific train and stations used. G trains, connecting Guangzhou North Station, Guangzhou South Station, and Shenzhen North Station, offer the fastest service, completing the journey in as little as 29 minutes. Inter-city C trains, serving Guangzhou Station/ Guangzhou East Station and Shenzhen Station, capture approximately 30 minutes. Passengers traveling on C trains are permitted to board later trains with the same origin, destination, and seat class on the same day if they miss their originally scheduled departure.

Ticket prices for the Guangzhou-Shenzhen route average around US$34.87, with options ranging from a low of US$3.15 to a high of US$66.59. The shortest possible journey time is currently listed as –:– with an average journey time of 1 hour and 21 minutes.

The railway utilizes a variety of rolling stock, including CRH1A EMU, CRH6A EMU, CR200J, CRH1A-A EMU, CRH1E-250 EMU, CRH2A EMU, and CRH380A EMU trains. The CRH6A is used for regular service, while other models are occasionally deployed for demand-relief between Guangzhou and Shenzhen stations or Shenzhen East station.
