Man โBuilds โremarkably Functional Micro-House for โUnderโค โฌ5,000
Amidstโฃ complex worldโข events, oneโข manโข found solace and a creative outlet in building a remarkably โฃsmall, yet fully functional, home. Levi Kelly,โ aโ micro-house expert and YouTuber, โrecently completed construction of a tiny dwelling measuring just 1.8 meters in length, demonstrating that pleasant living is possible even inโ extremely limited spaces.
The project, โwhichโค took approximatelyโ oneโข month to complete, โbenefited from favorable weather and โขassistance fromโข Kelly’s wife.โค He managed to keep costs downโ to โขaround โฌ4,600, largely due to โคhaving pre-existing โmaterials. The bulk of the expensesโ whent towards wood,โข insulation,โ a solar system, andโค electrical โขinstallation.
The most significant cost, had โheโข needed to purchase it, would have been the battery system, potentially reaching โฌ2,600. However, Kelly already owned one. The next largest expense was a reconditioned airโ conditioning andโ heating unit, acquired for โฌ550, โฃwhichโค heโ felt added a touch of โluxury to the compact space.Kelly incorporated a “chopron”โฃ – a terraneryโฃ – to maximize natural light โand designed the structure with enough headroom to stand comfortably. The exterior is finished with cedar โwood, painted black and sealed for a modern aesthetic.
Despite its diminutive size, the micro-house boastsโข a surprising arrayโข of features: a compact air โconditioner/heater, a folding bed โin the attic area (suitableโ for โindividuals up to 1.78โข meters tall), a storage bank for the battery, aโค portableโ toilet and outdoor shower, and aโ mini-kitchen equipped with a refrigerator, folding tapโ sink, and a walnut countertop. The sink area cleverly incorporates a โchopping boardโ to expandโค the usable workspace.โ While not designed forโ elaborate cooking,โฃ simpleโค meals can be prepared using an electric hob or camping stove.
The entire setupโค is powered by solar โขpanels on the roof, with the option โฃto โcharge the battery โdirectly โfromโฃ a โฃmains outletโข forโข faster replenishment.
Kelly rigorously tested the micro-house’s resilience, even spendingโค a night inside during a snowstorm. He โฃreported the house performedโข exceptionally well, โprovidingโ heat and โฃremaining structurally sound. He also enjoyed a โขcamping experience inside with his โthree-year-old son, finding โขthe space surprisingly comfortable and enjoyable โคdespite its limitations.
While Kelly doesn’t envision permanently living โin the micro-houseโฃ himself, he โbelievesโค it demonstrates the potentialโ forโข minimalist โฃliving. He notes its portability โ- itโฃ can be transported with aโ carโค – and suggests that someone seeking a simple lifestyle could easily โadapt to it.
He advises aspiring micro-house builders to โคprioritize their needs. He aimed for the smallest, most functional design possible, but recommends adding a few extra centimeters in width or height (perhaps aiming โฃfor 3-5 meters) for increased comfort. โ
Kelly shares his expertise and showcasesโ various unique accommodations – fromโค treehouses and container homes to luxury residences – on his YouTube channel.
