According to data provided by the MTA, toll evasion numbers began to rise around the time of the COVID-19 pandemic.
In fact, the bus system is the most affected and to stop more than 50% of passengers who do not pay the city bus fare, the MTA has organized inspectors on some local lines.

The City Transportation Agency is making sure every fare counts and, in 2022 alone, they estimate they lost around 315 million dollars due to evasion.
This money is invested precisely in improving the service to hire more mechanical operators to have a bigger fleet of buses, and also in making the routes run more frequently, the entity emphasizing it.
They say that if some people need assistance, there are cases where less is paid, thanks to the fair rates program, elderly people, like some city residents according to the income, eligible for a 50% discount.
Some discounted students and all New Yorkers can save by purchasing weekly passes.
So, be careful, because from now on, there will be more inspectors on some of the local routes where these violations are often committed.
