MTA Weekend Transportation Changes due to Queensboro Plaza Station Remodeling

by Chief editor of world-today-news.com January 5, 2024
written by Chief editor of world-today-news.com

Changes to the city’s transportation system train service are scheduled for every weekend this month.

This is because the MTA continues with remodeling work at the Queensboro Plaza station.

All passenger access will be closed at Queensboro Plaza from early Saturday morning until 5 a.m. Monday.

This will affect passengers on lines 7, N, Q and F.

The changes will take effect starting at midnight on Saturdays and ending at five in the morning on Mondays.

Among the most significant service modifications:

*There will be no service on the 7 and F lines between Queens and Manhattan.

*Line 7 will be operating between the Roosevelt Ave./Jackson Heights and Main Street stops.

*And parts of the Q, N, and F lines will be suspended.

For more information about the scheduled changes, you can visit the website MTA.org or call 5-1-1.

The MTA will work to make the station more accessible.

The main work consists of the installation of elevators from platform to mezzanine.

But while the station is closed they will also work on rehabilitating stairs and installing new security and communication systems.

At the moment it is not known if this work will continue in the coming months.

We contacted the MTA, who says they will let us know when appropriate.

Subway Train Derails at 96th Street Station: More Than 20 Minor Injuries Reported

Subway Train Derails at 96th Street Station: More Than 20 Minor Injuries Reported

by Chief editor of world-today-news.com January 5, 2024
written by Chief editor of world-today-news.com

There has reportedly been a partial derailment of a subway train at the 96th Street station on Manhattan’s Upper West Side, according to official reports.

In the incident there were more than 20 people with minor injuries, who were traveling on a line 1 train heading north (Uptown). The authorities received the first calls for help around 3 p.m.

The line 1 train would have hit a train without passengers (a work train, they call it, with four employees).

The impact caused the passenger train to partially derail.

The work train had previously had its emergency brakes vandalized and workers were repairing it, MTA officials said. During the repair, one of these brakes would have returned to its normal state (that is, it stopped stopping the train) and that is when the train moved in the direction where the line 1 train was coming from.

There will be delays in 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 train service in Manhattan, Brooklyn. More information: https://t.co/hL7P2JehIL.

The MTA made an announcement on social media about the suspension of service on several subway lines.

“There is a major disruption to 1/2/3 service as emergency crews assist passengers and conduct an investigation after a train derailed near 96 St.

“There is no 1/2/3 service in most of Manhattan.

“Go to mta.info to see more details and alternatives,” the message reads.

All passengers on train 1 were evacuated.

Later, Mayor Adams also posted a message on social media about the incident.

“Our team is responding to the train derailment on the 1/2/3 line at 96th Street. Emergency personnel from @FDNY and @NYPDNews are on the ground assisting in efforts. Please avoid the area of 96th and Broadway if you can “wrote the mayor.

The firefighters also posted a message on social networks informing them of the work they had done since they were called to respond to the emergency.

Brooklyn Sinkhole Update: Water and Electricity Restored, Safety Precautions in Place

Brooklyn Sinkhole Update: Water and Electricity Restored, Safety Precautions in Place

by Chief editor of world-today-news.com January 3, 2024
written by Chief editor of world-today-news.com

Water and electricity services have been restored to all customers in Brooklyn who were affected by a large hole in the pavement Tuesday morning.

City officials say the sinkhole, about 25 feet wide and 20 feet deep, was caused by a break in the sewer line at Sixth Avenue and 68th Street in Bay Ridge.

The Department of Environmental Protection reported that water service was temporarily shut off at some homes while repairs were made.

The water is safe to drink, but there is a possibility that it may appear cloudy.

Officials say this is normal when a disturbance occurs in the main pipeline.

This is solved by letting the tap run until the water runs clear and cold.

The fifth fatality, Jordy Bentances, lived in LeFrak City.

The fatal accident occurred yesterday at the point where the Cross Island Parkway and Whitestone Expressway meet, in the Whitestone sector.

Preliminary investigations indicate that the Mazda vehicle was apparently traveling at a high speed when it collided with the area that divides the lanes and overturned, being hit by a Honda car, which is believed to have been traveling at normal speed in the same direction.

Queens Boulevard to Receive $30 Million Federal Funds for Safety Infrastructure Redesign

Queens Boulevard to Receive $30 Million Federal Funds for Safety Infrastructure Redesign

by Chief editor of world-today-news.com December 20, 2023
written by Chief editor of world-today-news.com

Officials announced Tuesday that the city received nearly thirty million dollars in federal funds that will be invested in safety infrastructure on Queens Boulevard.

The grant comes from the “Safe Streets and Roads for All” program that has already provided more than $1 billion to the city under the Adams Administration.

The mayor’s office says the additional $29.75 million is to continue the redesign of a section of Queens Boulevard in the Woodside area.

“All New Yorkers – drivers, cyclists and pedestrians alike – deserve to feel safe on our streets, and this $30 million investment from the Biden-Harris administration will complement the additional $1 billion in federal funding our administration has already received to keep New Yorkers safe on our roads,” said Mayor Adams.

“These funds will bring much-needed safety infrastructure to Queens Boulevard, help us understand how e-bikes have changed our urban landscape, and expand efforts to make our urban fleet as safe as possible. “Public safety is the prerequisite for prosperity and that is why our administration has fought for real investments in our city’s road safety,” the mayor added.

The city also plans to expand its use of smart speed assist technology to an additional 1,700 vehicles in the city fleet.

The redesign of Queens Boulevard will be from Roosevelt Avenue to 73rd Street.

“The transformation of Queens Boulevard shows how redesigning streets can prevent accidents, injuries and deaths,” said Department of Transportation (DOT) Commissioner Ydanis Rodríguez.

“No street should be known as the ‘Boulevard of Death,’ and this grant will help us make permanent safety improvements on Queens Boulevard. “We thank the Biden-Harris administration and the entire congressional delegation for their support of Vision Zero and our efforts to reduce traffic deaths across the city,” the commissioner added.

Until the Department of Transportation began redesigning Queens Boulevard in 2015, it was one of the most dangerous thoroughfares in the city.

Between 2009 and 2014, 42 people died or suffered serious injuries on this stretch of Queens Boulevard, hence the nickname “Boulevard of Death.”

Mayor Eric Adams Expands Fair Fares Program to Provide 50% Transit Discounts to More Low-Income New Yorkers

Mayor Eric Adams Expands Fair Fares Program to Provide 50% Transit Discounts to More Low-Income New Yorkers

by Chief editor of world-today-news.com December 17, 2023
written by Chief editor of world-today-news.com

More low-income New Yorkers will be able to get 50 percent discounts on bus and train fares through the program Fair Fares or “Fair Fares”as announced by Mayor Eric Adams this Friday.

“Fair Fares is a vital program for our working families and I am proud to announce that we are making it even more accessible.

“We are investing $20 million to expand eligibility so more New Yorkers can use these transportation discounts,” Mayor Eric Adams wrote in a social media message.

The news brings joy to New Yorkers like Rosa Gamboa, a mother of four who now says she is interested in being part of this program.

“Well, first I think it would be a saving, right. I think it would be something good for all the people we work with and, in any case, the ticket would be a good option,” Gamboa said.

Mayor Adams, along with other municipal officials, reported that they will invest $20 million so that more people benefit from the ‘Fair Fares’ program.

The administration has increased the income limit to qualify from 100% to 120% of the federal poverty level.

This means that previously, a family of four earning more than $26,000 a year did not qualify, but may now be eligible as the limit has been raised to $30,000 annually for a family of four.

Users like Jessica Jauregui say that she would like to be part of this program but that she is not eligible because the limit is still too low.

“Even if one earns very little, imagine having to put in a quarter and if one earns more, a family of four is an apartment and they are at 2,200, 2,500 so I think it should not be like that because 30 thousand, imagine, almost no one is going to apply because you have to earn more to be able to survive here, New York is very expensive,” said Jauregui.

With this increase in funding, the Fair Fares program will reach 95 million annually starting in fiscal year 2024.

Activists defending public transportation users demand that the mayor increase it to at least 200% above the federal poverty level, to benefit even more New Yorkers.

“This increase in eligibility is a step forward in allowing more New Yorkers to access half-price cards, but unfortunately it does not fully address the socioeconomic problem of our community and falls short of alleviating the financial burden of many,” Mayra Mayra Aldás, from Riders Allience, said in a statement.

For more information about the program, you can dial the municipal line 311 or visit the website of Fair Fares where the requirements for the benefit are and how to request it. Currently there are more than 300 thousand people enrolled in the program.
