Arizona Suburbs Ranked โคin National Safetyโ Study
Aโค recent study by SmartAsset analyzed 360 U.S. suburbsโ within a 45-minuteโ drive of a major city, ranking them based on โsafety โmetricsโ including violent crime,โ propertyโฃ crime, drug overdose rates,โ traffic fatalities, and excessive drinking. The results, published inโฃ late August 2025, reveal a mixed safety profile for Arizona suburbs.
Rio Rico, located south โofโฃ Tucson, was identified as the safest โsuburb in Arizonaโ and ranked 42nd nationally. โGold Canyon,โค east of Mesa, followed closely in 82nd place, while Vail, also near Tucson, secured the 139th position.
Of the tenโข Arizona suburbs evaluated,โค nine ranked below the national average for overall safety.โ Green Valley (No. 182),โค Surprise (No. 204), Maricopa (No.โข 206), Oro Valley (No.โข 224),Peoria โค(No. 238), Marana (No. 248),Sahuarita (No. 253), Apache junction (No. 276), and Tempe โ(No.โฃ 327) comprised the remaining Arizona locations analyzed.
Notably, โคfive Arizona cities – Mesa, Scottsdale, Gilbert, โขGlendale, and Chandler – alongside โPhoenix and โTucson, now rank among the topโฃ 100 cities nationally, โฃindicatingโ a broader trend of urban safety in theโ state.
The study highlighted that seven of the ten Arizona suburbs analyzed demonstrated better violent crime scores than Lehi, Utah, the top-ranked suburbโข overall. Furthermore, โคfive Arizona โsuburbs matched or exceeded Lehi’s performance in terms of low property crime โrates.
Though, Arizona suburbs were โคnegatively impactedโค byโค higher โrates of traffic fatalities. The state recorded the seventh-highest number of traffic โdeaths nationally in 2023, according to โthe National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Jaclyn DeJohn of SmartAsset noted the ironic benefit of congested trafficโฃ in cities like New York and Boston, stating,โ “Stop-and-goโ traffic โขdoes โhave some benefits.”
Excessive alcohol consumption also contributed โto lower rankings for โArizona suburbs.โ While only 9.4% of adults in Lehi reportedโ occasional heavy or binge โคdrinking, between 19% and 20% โof residents in the analyzed Arizona suburbs reported similar behavior. These โคalcohol consumption figuresโข were sourced from both specificโฃ suburban surveys and broader county-level data.the study indicated that drug overdose deaths were concentrated in the five Tucson suburbs within Pimaโฃ County: Vail, Green Valley, Marana, โOro Valley, and Sahuarita.
