Lisbon Cable Car Tragedy: Faulty ropeโค Not Up to Standard, Investigation Finds
Lisbon, Portugal – A preliminary investigationโข into the September 3rd derailment โof the โคElevadorโค da โคGlรณria cableโ car in Lisbon โคhas revealed the cable that โคsnapped, leading toโ the tragicโข accident,โค did not meet required safety specifications and lacked certification for passenger transport. The accident resulted in 16 fatalities and approximately 20 injuries.
The โฃfindings, โฃreleased Monday by the Portugueseโ Air and Rail Accident Investigation Authority โฃ(GPIAAF), point to a critical failure in the procurement process.Investigators determined the rope used was not compliant with Carris, the operator of Lisbon’s cable cars, internal standards.
In response to the findings, the โขGPIAAF has โขordered all othre cable cars in Lisbon to remain closed until thier braking systemsโ are verified as fully functional. The authority has also advised Carris to โengageโ a specialized firm to conduct a comprehensive inspectionโฃ of all cable cars, focusing on cablesโฃ and braking mechanisms.
Carrisโ maintains that all scheduled maintenance had been completed, citing a four-year general inspection last โฃperformed โขin 2022 and more extensive bi-annual maintenance completed this year. The company alsoโค reports regular daily, weekly, and monthly inspections are routinely conducted.
The โขGPIAAFโค is recommendingโ carris โundertake aโค thorough review of its internal control systems, particularly regarding the โprocurement โขof criticalโ vehicle components, โto prevent โfuture incidents. The investigationโข is ongoing.
