Washington Wizards guard Trae Young is progressing toward his debut with the team, while forward Anthony Davis remains in a holding pattern as he recovers from separate injuries, the team announced Thursday.
Young, acquired in a trade with the Atlanta Hawks in January, is expected to “ramp up” basketball activities as he continues to rehabilitate a sprained MCL and a thigh bruise. The Wizards stated he will be reevaluated next week, according to the Associated Press.
The 27-year-old has not played since December 27th. Wizards General Manager Will Dawkins earlier this month indicated Young had already begun practicing in limited settings, participating in one-on-none and two-on-two drills.
Davis, who arrived in Washington earlier this month via a trade with the Dallas Mavericks, is dealing with ligament damage in his hand. He recently visited hand surgeon Steven Shin in Los Angeles and is now back in Washington, the team said. He will be reevaluated in two weeks.
“You just follow the process,” Wizards coach Brian Keefe told reporters. “That’s what we always do.”
The pair of All-Stars, boasting a combined 14 All-Star selections, are key components of the Wizards’ rebuilding effort. Their arrival signaled a shift in direction for the franchise, though a firm timeline for their respective returns remains uncertain.
Davis last played on January 8th.
