FSSAI Introduces New ‘Ayurveda Aahara‘ Category for Food Licensing
New Delhi: โค The Food Safety and โขStandards Authority of India (FSSAI) has established a new category – ‘Ayurveda Aahara’ – for food products rooted in classical Ayurvedic texts, streamlining โขthe licensingโ process for โคmanufacturers and bolstering consumerโ confidence. The regulations, initiallyโ announced in May 2022, formally recognizeโ preparations detailed in Ayurvedic literature, offering โa clear โคpathway to central licensing.
The โnew category โencompasses a diverseโฃ range of conventionalโ foods, including ‘Angarakarkati’ (baked wheat balls), ‘Krishara’ (khichdi), ‘Dadhi’ (curd-based preparations), ‘panaka’ (fruit drinks), and โ’Gulkand’ (rose petal jam).
According to an FSSAI official, “Thisโค change gives manufacturers โa clear wayโ toโค getโ a central license. The main impact โขis thatโ it โprovides a structured process, making it easier for businesses to sell these products legally. It โalso helps ensure the โฃproducts’ safety and quality, which builds โtrust with โconsumers.”
The development is theโข result of collaborationโฃ betweenโฃ the FSSAIโข and the Ministry of Ayush. Theโข new system allows Food Business Operators (FBOs) โขto request inclusion of additional products, supported by documentation from authoritative Ayurvedic โtexts.Dr. Ankitโ Bansal, consultant of internal โขmedicine & infectious diseases at Sri Balaji Action Medical Institute in Delhi, highlighted the meaning of ‘Ayurveda Aahara’, stating, “Ayurveda Aahaar is a valuable bridge between โnutrition and medicine. Rooted in centuries-oldโข wisdom, it treats food as the first line of therapy, helping prevent and manage โคlifestyle disorders like diabetes, hypertension, and obesity.”
Sanjeev Asthana,โ chief executive officer of Patanjali Foods Ltd, emphasized theโ regulatory gap this addresses. “The regulation fills a critical gap in the regulatory framework governing ayurvedic food products, which lacked โformal โคrecognition โขand licensing avenues,” he said. “For consumers, this assures safety, quality, and authenticity. For the industry,it provides clarity and a clear legal framework for licensing and registration.” Asthana โalso anticipates a boost to โฃexportsโ and global acceptance of India’s Ayurvedic food products.
