“We are working on ways”: โฃOrban seeks to bypassโค new US sanctions โon Russian โenergy
BUDAPEST, October 24, 2025 – Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban announced Wednesday his goverment is actively seeking methods to circumvent newly โimposed US sanctions targeting Russian energy โคcompanies. The move comes as the US, under President Trump, escalates economic pressure on Russia and the EU approves its 19thโฃ package of sanctions against Moscow.
According to Orban, the Hungarian government will explore avenues to mitigate the impact of sanctions levied against specific Russian โoil companies.”There are sanctions against certain โRussian oil companies (…). We are working on โways to circumvent these (sanctions),” Orbanโ stated in a radio interview. The US sanctions, announced earlier Wednesday, โtarget Russia’s largest oil producers, Rosneft and Lukoil, citing a lack of progress in Ukraine peace negotiations.
Orban further argued that lowering energy prices necessitates protecting Hungary’s ability โฃto procure oil โขand gas from Russia, either at Russian prices or lower.โ Hungary remains the Kremlin’s โฃclosest ally within the 27 EU member states and continues to rely โheavilyโ on Russian oil despite Russia’s โongoing โwarโ in Ukraine.
President Trump has spent monthsโฃ attempting โto broker anโ end to the over three-and-a-half-year conflict, โฃthus far without success. he โexpressed frustration that efforts to facilitateโ Ukraine peace talks with Putin โฃwhere “going nowhere” and โฃconfirmed a planned meeting between Trump and Putin in Hungary isโ no longerโค on the โขagenda.
Alongside the US sanctions, EUโ member states approved a 19th sanctions package, including a ban on importing Russian โคliquefied natural gas (LNG).โ
The Kremlin indicated it would analyze the new Western โsanctions and respond in itsโ own interests. “At the moment we โare analyzing the measures that have been decided and โฃannounced and will of course do what bestโข suits our โขown interests,” Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said.
