Geneva Unveils Aspiring “Geneva 2024” Development Plan Integrating Climate Strategy
Geneva has launched “Geneva 2024,” a complete 15-year development plan that integrates the municipality’s climate strategy, published in February 2022. This new plan, succeeding “Geneva 2020” which primarily focused on housing construction, marks a significant shift in the city’s development approach.
Albane Ferraris, head of the town planning service in Geneva, stated, “We have reviewed our development strategy and that changes everything.” The “Geneva 2024” plan aims to address the “climate urgency, housing crisis, and social emergency.” A key objective is to prepare the city for population growth while prioritizing nature and biodiversity in urban planning from the outset.
The authorities have set ambitious targets to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 60% and energy consumption by 30% by 2030. These goals align with the Federal Council’s long-term climate strategy, which aims for net-zero emissions by 2050. Ferraris commented on the challenge, noting, “It complicates the task, but it makes it all the more exciting.”
