Congo confirmed its commitment to the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC), days after its neighbor Angola decided to withdraw from the organization.
Bruno Jean-Richard Etoua, the Congolese Minister of Oil, said in a post on the LinkedIn platform: “The Republic of the Congo confirms its firm commitment to the strategic policies established by the Secretary-General of OPEC and OPEC+.”
He added: “Congo is committed to continuing close and constructive cooperation with all member states.”
The development comes after Nigeria confirmed, on Friday, its commitment to OPEC, with Heineken Lokbubiri, Minister of State for Petroleum, saying that his country’s position remains firm.
OPEC set a target for Congo to produce 277,000 barrels per day in 2024. Congo obtained full membership in OPEC in 2018.
Nigeria, the largest oil producer in Africa, and Angola were among several countries that had lower production targets set in 2024 after years of faltering in achieving previous targets, according to Reuters.
