Brazilian Police Rescue Hundreds โof Exotic animals in โMajor Traffickingโค Operation
RIO DE JANEIROโค – Brazilian police have dismantled a major wildlife trafficking ring andโ rescued over 500 animals, including โขtoucans, macaws,โ monkeys, and reptiles, from across the state of rio de Janeiro. The operation, conducted earlier this week, โalso uncovered a โฃcache of weapons and ammunition linkedโข to other criminal activities.
Authorities report the animals were captured inโฃ the โwild โand intended for sale across Brazil and potentially internationally. Investigators have identified someโ of the buyers โคfueling the criminal chain, though details have not been released. the gang also traded in weapons and ammunition,โฃ used in the commission of other crimes, according โto police official Felipe Curi.
Wildlife trafficking is a meaningful problem in Brazil, withโ an estimated 38 million animals taken โfrom โขthe wild annually, according to the Brazilianโ NGO RENCTAS (National Network to Combatโ Wildlife Trafficking). Ninety per cent of these animals die before being sold.
the rescued animalsโค are currently receiving veterinary care โฃfrom volunteers โคand undergoing forensic evaluation. Following triage,thay will be โคprepared for reintroduction to their natural habitats.
