The Myths of Solar Eclipses: What Ancient Civilizations Believed – Bali Total Solar Eclipse 2024

Bali – A total solar eclipse will occur tomorrow, April 8 2024. Since time immemorial, this phenomenon has always been followed by myths that are believed to this day. What are the myths about solar eclipses?

Reporting from detikInet, Sunday (7/4/2024), ancient civilizations such as the Maya and ancient Greeks had their own mythology and traditions regarding solar eclipses. In general, they know that solar eclipses are caused by the Moon covering the Sun, but the meaning of this phenomenon is very different for each ancient civilization.

“Cultures other than our own, both present and past, have very different views of nature,” said Anthony Aveni, professor of anthropology and astronomy at Colgate University, quoted by detikInet from Space.

Following are the myths about the Solar Eclipse:

Mayan tribe

For the Mayans, when a solar eclipse occurred it was like they saw the Moon eating the Sun. They interpreted this as a view of the practice of cannibalism carried out by their ancestors, which had long been abolished by Mayan law.

“So for the Maya, eclipses, which occur in cosmic space, are a reminder that the social order is always in danger of losing balance,” said Aveni.

China Kuno

The Maya were not the only civilization to think they saw the Sun being swallowed by the Moon. In ancient Chinese mythology, a solar eclipse was said to occur when a dragon tried to devour the sun.

According to a NASA report, ancient Chinese people responded to a solar eclipse by taking to the streets and beating drums to scare dragons away. One ancient Chinese record — which likely refers to a solar eclipse in 2134 BC — reports that the sun and moon did not meet peacefully.

The NASA report said the hustle and bustle on the streets made the Chinese emperor see the eclipse occurring in the sky. The emperor was then angry because the two court astronomers failed to predict this event, and ordered their heads to be beheaded.

Ancient Greek

For the ancient Greeks, an eclipse was a sign that the gods were displeased with humans, and in return the Sun would leave Earth. According to Merriam-Webster, the word ‘eclipse’ or eclipse comes from the Greek ‘ekleipsis’ which means ‘abandonment’.

Responding to a solar eclipse that occurred in 647 BC, the poet Archilochus once wrote: “Zeus, father of the Olympian gods, made night in the middle of the day, hiding the shining light of the Sun, and great fear fell on men.”

NASA Confirmed Total Solar Eclipse (GMT) to Take Place on April 8, 2024 – Ancient Myths Explained

LIVE Techno – The United States Aeronautics and Space Administration or NASA confirmed that the Total Solar Eclipse (GMT) will take place on April 8, 2024.

This is a phenomenon when the Sun’s rays are blocked by the Moon, the Moon’s shadow will fall on Earth. The area of the Earth that is under the shadow of the Moon’s core (umbra) will experience GMT.

The phenomenon of a total solar eclipse is an event that has had an attraction throughout human history.

The following are GMT myths in various civilizations dating back thousands of years, based on processed data LIVE Techno:

In Ancient Egypt, the Serpent Apep, a spirit of evil and chaos, was said to have swallowed the Sun God Ra, thus requiring an army of other gods to fight Apep and split him open to release Ra and prevent the world from falling into darkness.

The Vikings believed that the eclipse occurred when the Wolf Skoll, who had been chasing the Sun Goddess Sol across the sky, finally caught up with her.

If Skoll manages to swallow Sol and plunge the world into darkness, it signals the start of Ragnarok, the battle between the gods and the end of the world.

In Hindu mythology, the battle between Surya, the Sun, and the demigod Rahu who seeks to gain immortality. In one version of the myth, Rahu is beheaded for his efforts and his head continues to chase Surya, trying to devour him.

In Ancient China, myths tell of a dragon that swallowed the Sun, while myths in South America tell of leopards. In Vietnam, there is a giant frog that swallows the sun, and in Korea, a pack of dogs.

However, not all explanations about eclipses are negative. The Tlingit people of North America believed that the Sun and Moon would have more children, referring to the stars and planets that appear visible during an eclipse but cannot be seen otherwise.

In Africa, the Battammaliba people see an eclipse as the Sun and Moon fighting and take it as a sign to put aside grudges and end the feud.

The Inuit, Sun and Moon are brothers who fight each other. The eclipse means that the Moon, Annigan, has overtaken Malina, the Sun.

Surinamese, the Kalina tribe also believes that the Sun and Moon are siblings who are fighting and an eclipse means the fight becomes fierce, where each one brings down each other.

Tahitians have a similar myth, telling about the Sun and Moon of a pair of lovers who got lost at one point.

Although ancient myths attempted to explain eclipses without the scientific knowledge we have today, superstitions surrounding the phenomenon still exist.

Modern superstitions surrounding eclipses include the ideas that pregnant women should not view the eclipse, food should not be prepared during the eclipse, or that it is unsafe to be outdoors.

Some people still see the eclipse as a sign of the end times, including those who believe it will usher in the Rapture and those who think it will mark the collapse of the simulation we all live in.

However, there is one Total Solar Eclipse (GMT) myth that is still true, namely, don’t look directly at the Sun to see the eclipse, because you risk damaging your eyes.

Total Solar Eclipse on April 8 2024 Ahead of Eid al-Fitr: Jayabaya Prophecies and Observations

Wednesday, April 3 2024 – 04:00 WIB

Jakarta – On April 8 2024, there will be a Total Solar Eclipse (GMT), which will occur ahead of Eid al-Fitr 1445 Hijriah.

Bosscha Observatory, Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB), explains the Total Solar Eclipse which will occur on that date.

Reported on an Instagram account bosschaobservatory, Wednesday, April 3 2024, a solar eclipse occurs when the Sun, Moon and Earth are in a straight line in space. A total solar eclipse occurs when the Moon completely covers the disk of the Sun.

Considering the small diameter of the Moon, the path of the Moon’s shadow that falls on the Earth’s surface when an eclipse occurs only covers a small area on Earth.

Then, because of the dynamics of the Earth’s rotation, the area through which the eclipse passes will be different on each occasion. The total solar eclipse which will occur on April 8 will pass through the South Pacific, Central America and North America.

The eclipse will occur at around 17.45-18.49 UTC or coincides with midnight in Indonesia.

The process of an eclipse is actually one of the topics in the Jayabaya Prediction. Prabu Jayabaya (1135-1159) was the king of the Kediri kingdom. He is known for his writing, namely the Jayabaya Prediction.

There are several manuscripts containing Jayabaya Predictions, including Serat Jayabaya Musarar, Serat Pranitiwakya, and so on. Apart from that, it is also mentioned in the Babad Tanah Jawi.

In one of the stanzas of Jayabaya’s prediction is written:

“There are many reasons. The wrong season of rain. There are many earthquakes and eclipses. The power is different. Death is worthless. In a thousand years, eight hundred years ago, the land of Java was destroyed, Ratu Kara Murka Kuthila disappeared”.

The translation:

“There are many events and occurrences in nature and in the life of human society that are extraordinary. The rainy season is irregular and often comes with high rainfall (floods) to no rainfall at all (drought).”

“Earthquakes often occur and claim many lives, livestock and property, as well as mysterious natural phenomena, namely lunar eclipses and solar eclipses.”

In the Jayabaya Prophecy it is said that a period full of disaster will come. The mountains will erupt, the earth will shake, the seas and rivers will overflow. This will be a time of great suffering.

A time of arbitrariness and indifference. When cunning people rule, and good people will be oppressed.

“But, after that most difficult time, a new era will come, an era full of splendor and glory. The Golden Age of the archipelago. And that new era will come after the arrival of the Fair Queen, or Satria Piningit,” explained Masud Thoyib Adiningrat, Javanese Culture who is also the Commander of the Jayakarta Duchy.

Debunked: Earth Will Not Go Dark for Three Days on April 8, 2024, Just a Total Solar Eclipse!

by Chief editor of world-today-news.com March 30, 2024
written by Chief editor of world-today-news.com

Jakarta –

Some time ago there was news that the Earth would go dark for three days starting from April 8 2024. What will happen?

In response, the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) explained that on April 8 2024 the Earth will experience the phenomenon of a Total Solar Eclipse (GMT). This phenomenon can indeed make the sky dark because the Moon’s disk covers the Sun.

However, this only happens in areas that pass through the GMT Totality path. This eclipse can be observed in North America, South America, Mexico, the central United States and eastern Canada.

This eclipse will occur for several hours with a total duration of 4 minutes 26 seconds, starting on April 8 at 15.42 to 20.52 local time.

Because Indonesia does not pass through the GMT Totality path, dark skies will not occur in the archipelago. So BMKG reminded the public not to worry.

“Well, BMKG friends, you don’t need to worry because the confusion that says the Earth will be dark for 3 days is incorrect information, OK?” wrote BMKG in its official Instagram post, quoted on Saturday (30/3/2024).

The Earth Will Be Dark 3 Days from April 8 Hoax!

After investigating, information about the Earth going dark for three days was spread from a number of accounts on the TikTok social media platform. The video narration states that not because of GMT, at that time the Earth will pass through the Photon Belt.

National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN) astronomer and astrophysics expert Thomas Djamaluddin explained that this narrative was misinformation. According to him, the term photon belt is not known in science and has been spread several times.

“It’s clearly a hoax. Similar hoaxes have spread on Earth before with various causes. All the reasons mentioned for the cause of Earth’s darkness have no scientific basis,” he said, quoted by CNN Indonesia.

Indeed, Earth has experienced dark times for many years in the past. But not because of the photon belt but rather an asteroid impact 66 million years ago and for the next 100 years there will be no large asteroids that will threaten Earth.

“Currently, for the next 100 years, there will be no large asteroids that will threaten Earth,” he added.

Regarding GMT on April 8, Researcher from the Space Research Center, BRIN Aeronautics and Space Research Organization, Farahhati Mumlahana, explained that some areas of the Earth will indeed become quite dark. But in a short time especially when GMT peaks.

Unfortunately, once again this phenomenon cannot be enjoyed in Indonesia. Because it only crosses Western Europe, North America, South America, the Pacific Ocean, the Atlantic and the Arctic.

Total Solar Eclipse 2024: Facts and Details Revealed by NASA

by Chief editor of world-today-news.com March 14, 2024
written by Chief editor of world-today-news.com

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – Solar eclipse The total is predicted by the United States Space Agency or NASA to occur over America on April 8, 2024. According to the greatamericaneclipse page, the citizens of Uncle Sam’s country are really looking forward to the moment that occurred seven years ago in the skies of America, here are the interesting facts.

1. Total solar eclipses rarely occur in America, the last one was seven years ago

Referring to usatoday.com last time it happened total solar eclipse in America, namely on April 21 2017. The entire population of America could see very clearly at that time how this astronomical event occurred. In 2024, America will experience this phenomenon again, and NASA predicts this event will repeat itself 20 years later in 2044.

2. The eclipse will pass over millions of people and occur in a short time

Still from the same source, NASA said a total solar eclipse in the United States would be witnessed by more than millions of people. Considering that in 2017 the audience reached 215 million people, of course they will be looking forward to this event even more after seven years of waiting. Apart from that, this total solar eclipse is predicted to occur in a short time, namely 4 minutes 27 seconds, according to NASA astronomical calculations. Observers are asked to prepare themselves to target the momentum of the eclipse.

3. The eclipse will begin in the city of Texas, United States

The total solar eclipse will start in the United States City of Texas at 13:27 CDT and end in Maine at 15:35 EDT. Reporting from greatamericaneclipse.com The United States prepared animation through books, maps and mobile applications to capture the momentum with time adjusted to the occurrence of the eclipse.

4. A total solar eclipse is more impressive than an annular solar eclipse

During an annular solar eclipse, the moon that covers the sun still leaves an outer ring called the “ring of fire”. This ring only darkens the sky and does not make the earth sink as dark as night as happens in a total solar eclipse. The moon will show a much more attractive red color when it enters the earth’s shadow. This is what makes the total solar eclipse highly anticipated next April.
