“Roofman” Review: Channing Tatum Delivers a Career-Best Performance in This Amazing True Story

Toronto, ON – Premiering tonight at the Toronto International‍ Film Festival, Roofman is‍ the kind of story you’d dismiss as fiction‍ if it weren’t‍ painstakingly,‌ unbelievably true. Paramount’s new release, ‌directed by Derek cianfrance (Blue Valentine, The ⁤Place Beyond the Pines), stars Channing Tatum in ‍a career-defining role as ⁢Jeffrey Manchester, a man driven to desperate measures by circumstance⁢ and a system that ‍failed him.

The film recounts the astonishing true story of Manchester, an Army ⁣82nd Airborne ⁢veteran who, after struggling to reintegrate into civilian life in the late 90s,⁤ turned⁣ to crime to provide⁤ for his⁣ wife and three children. ‍But this wasn’t just any crime. Sydney Sweeney’s ‘Christy’ Premiere Sparks Mixed Reviews at TIFF

by Julia Evans – Entertainment Editor September 6, 2025
written by Julia Evans – Entertainment Editor

Sydney Sweeney‘s “Christy” Earns Mixed Reviews ⁤Following‌ TIFF Premiere

Toronto ⁤- sydney Sweeney’s performance as boxer Christy⁤ Martin‍ is drawing significant attention following its premiere at the ⁤Toronto International⁢ Film Festival, though critical reception of the‌ film itself ‍is divided. The biopic, directed by Joseph Michôd, recounts the ⁣life of the trailblazing female‌ boxer, and early ⁢reviews highlight Sweeney’s transformative work while questioning the film’s originality.

The film’s nov. 7 theatrical release via Black Bear comes as Sweeney actively seeks to broaden ‌her acting range beyond romantic comedies. The buzz ⁣surrounding‍ “Christy” is crucial for both the actress and the film’s producers – Kerry ⁢Kohansky-Roberts, Teddy Schwarzman, Brent Stiefel, Justin Lothrop, Michôd, and sweeney herself – as thay ⁣aim to establish Sweeney as a serious dramatic talent and deliver a compelling sports narrative.

IndieWire’s Kate Erbland lauded Sweeney’s complete immersion in‍ the role, noting she “disappears into the⁤ role, not just changing her hair color, eye color, accent, and way of‍ moving, but her general⁢ air,her overall mien, the⁤ space she takes up in a room.” Similarly, Johnny Oleksinski of the New York Post called Sweeney “a knockout,” stating the film represents ⁢”a major step to showing there’s much more to ‌her than rom and com.”

However, not all critics where convinced ‍by the film’s overall execution. Nick Schager, writing for The Daily Beast, acknowledged Sweeney “gives a believable performance that almost transcends her role’s derivativeness,” but ultimately found the film to be “a manipulative hybrid of Rocky,Million Dollar Baby, and Monster” that lacked originality, even by A.I. standards.

TheWrap’s Chase Hutchinson offered a split assessment, writing that the‍ film “succeeds ‍about half the time, making for ⁢a split decision where Sweeney and Christy both emerge as champions while ⁤the film itself can’t quite go the distance.” Benjamin‌ Lee of The Guardian was more critical,‌ concluding that despite the real-life ‌Christy Martin’s tumultuous life, “in her biopic, we barely feel the impact.”

Martial Arts Action Film ‘The Furious’ Premieres at TIFF with Top Asian Talent

by Alex Carter - Sports Editor September 6, 2025
written by Alex Carter - Sports Editor

Bangkok – Veteran producer Charles Kong, known for his work on Crouching Tiger, ‌Hidden Dragon, has assembled an international cast of martial‌ arts stars for The Furious, a new action film shot entirely in Bangkok and poised ‍to reinvigorate the genre for global audiences. The project, handled internationally by XYZ Films and distributed in greater China by Kong’s Edko Films, aims to blend classic martial arts homage with contemporary action sensibilities.

The film’s ‍director, whose name was not immediately‍ available, stated the core‍ concept: “Everybody⁣ angry. Everybody furious. That’s⁢ why this⁤ movie is called ‘Furious.'”‌ The Furious draws inspiration ⁣from martial arts classics like Bruce ⁣Lee’s The Big Boss, but filmmakers emphasize a progression beyond ⁣mere nostalgia, incorporating numerous Easter eggs for genre fans within its fight choreography and costume design. ‌

Indonesian martial artist Iko Uwais, alongside other cast members, embraced the challenge of performing much of their⁣ own stunt work. ‌Uwais likened the commitment to a‌ musical performance, explaining, “If you want to create great art, ther is a sacrifice you have to pay. In action scenes,⁤ sometimes ⁢it’s‌ safe to use the double, but there’s something ‌missing. It’s a song – you cannot replace a vocalist in between when there’s ⁣a high note.”

Choreographer ⁣Tanigaki stressed the importance of emotional resonance alongside the action, stating,⁢ “Every time choreography and action and emotion must ⁤stick, must⁤ walk together. We have that mutual goal to make a very emotional action film.”

Kong views The furious as part of a larger effort to re-establish Asian action cinema on ⁤the world stage. “We want to tell the world‍ that there are still good action, martial art films. We are here,” he said. Both Kong and Uwais ‌expressed enthusiasm for potential sequels and continuing their collaboration, describing the team as ⁣a “dream team” and an “honor” to⁢ work with.

written by Emma Walker – News Editor

“The⁣ Man in My ‌Basement” ⁣- A ‍Thought-Provoking Thriller with⁤ Powerful Performances

Sag Harbor, NY – Nadia Latif’s directorial debut, The Man in My ⁢Basement, adapted from Walter Mosley’s 2004 novel, is a complex⁢ adn intellectually stimulating thriller currently generating buzz after its premiere at the toronto International Film ⁣Festival. while ⁢the film grapples⁣ with a multitude of weighty ⁣themes – power dynamics, race relations, colonialism,‍ and redemption – it’s the compelling performances from Corey Hawkins ⁢and Willem⁢ Dafoe ⁣that‍ truly anchor this ambitious, if somewhat uneven, adaptation.

The story unfolds in 1990s Sag Harbor, a‍ historically Black community nestled in an affluent Long Island village. Charles Blakely (Hawkins), a disgraced former ⁣banker ⁣spiraling into self-destruction, ⁤faces losing his‍ family home. A peculiar offer from the ⁤enigmatic Anniston Bennett (Dafoe) – $65,000 to⁤ rent his basement for 65⁤ days – presents ⁤a desperate lifeline.

However, the arrangement quickly ⁣descends into the bizarre.‌ Bennett, seemingly ⁢unfazed by‍ the basement’s dilapidated state, ⁢requests⁣ a‌ large metal ‌cage be installed…and then ⁣locks himself inside ⁢ it. Charles, horrified by the ⁣potential racial implications of the situation,is nonetheless compelled to continue the agreement by‌ the promise of financial salvation.

Latif,co-writing with Mosley, attempts ‍to⁣ weave together a‍ tapestry of ideas, and while the film doesn’t⁤ always ‍succeed in ⁣maintaining perfect coherence, its ⁣atmospheric tension and the captivating interplay between ⁢Hawkins and ‍Dafoe elevate the material. ‌ The‍ Man in My Basement isn’t a straightforward crime thriller; ⁢it’s a film that demands ‍engagement and invites‍ discussion.

Key Details:

Director: Nadia Latif
Cast: Corey Hawkins, Willem Dafoe, Anna Diop, Jonathan Ajayi, Gershwyn Eustache Jr.
Rating: ⁢R
Runtime: 1 hour⁤ 55 minutes
Release: Limited theatrical⁤ release followed by streaming ‍on Hulu later this year.

The Bottom Line: A ⁣shaky, but ultimately ⁢captivating, proposition for viewers ⁢seeking more then just ⁣surface-level entertainment.

by Julia Evans – Entertainment Editor September 6, 2025

Sydney ‍Sweeney Enters Best Actress Oscar Conversation with ⁢’Christy‘ Performance

Los angeles – Sydney ⁢Sweeney is generating important Oscar buzz for her transformative role in Christy, a biographical drama centered on boxer Christy Salters Martin. The film, ‌which premiered⁢ to positive reactions,‍ showcases ⁤Sweeney, 27, in a physically and emotionally demanding performance that has even earned praise from Martin herself, who offered vocal support during a post-screening Q&A.

Sweeney‍ underwent a rigorous physical transformation ‍for the role, building muscle through diet, exercise, and boxing training, and adopting a short black hairstyle to portray Martin,a West Virginian who rose to boxing ⁣prominence in the 1980s while concealing her lesbian identity and enduring abuse from⁤ her older husband and coach,Jim (played by Ben Foster).

While films depicting female fighters have been previously explored – including ‍ Girlfight (2000) starring Michelle rodriguez, Million dollar Baby (2004) with Hilary Swank, and Halle Berry’s Bruised ‌ (2020) – and stories of ⁣athletes facing domestic abuse have been told, such as in I,⁣ Tonya (2017), ‍critics note Sweeney and Foster’s performances, ‍alongside the specifics of Martin’s true story, distinguish Christy.Sweeney’s recent work includes Emmy-nominated⁣ roles in HBO’s Euphoria and The White Lotus, and a critically acclaimed performance in the 2023 ⁢TV film ⁢ Reality, where she portrayed intelligence leaker Reality Winner. She also served as a producer on Christy.

The ⁤film’s awards prospects will depend‍ on the distribution and campaigning efforts of Black Bear, which is releasing christy as the first film through its new distribution arm, with an awards-friendly release date⁤ of November 7. Sweeney’s willingness to address recent public scrutiny regarding her political affiliations, personal life, and commercial endorsements may also influence the film’s reception.

Claire Denis’ “The Fence”: A Review

by Lucas Fernandez – World Editor September 5, 2025
written by Lucas Fernandez – World Editor

Claire Denis’ “The Fence” Grapples with Colonial Ghosts in Tense New Drama

Toronto International Film Festival – Renowned French‌ director Claire Denis (“White Material,” “Great Work”) returns with ‌”The Fence,” a simmering, theatrical drama that confronts⁣ the lingering tensions of colonialism in contemporary⁤ Africa. Premiering at the Toronto International Film Festival, the film, adapted from Bernard-Marie Koltès‘ 1979 play Black Battles with Dogs, offers ⁢a‍ stark and unsettling ‍look at power dynamics,⁢ guilt, ⁢and the complexities of relationships built on unequal ground.

The film centers on⁣ Horn (Matt Dillon), a weary American foreman overseeing a remote ‍African construction site – a location that feels less like a workplace ‍and more like a relic of ‍colonial rule.⁣ His fragile peace is shattered by the arrival of his young ⁢British girlfriend, Leonie ‍(Mia McKenna-Bruce), and⁣ the potential cover-up of a worker’s death.

Denis, known for her ⁤visually poetic style, takes a different approach with “The Fence,” ‍prioritizing dialog and performance.⁣ While this shift occasionally ⁣feels stage-bound, it allows ⁢for compelling turns from⁢ the cast, especially McKenna-Bruce, fresh off her acclaimed ‍role in “How to⁤ Have Sex,” ⁣and the captivating Tom blyth. Their chemistry crackles with a sensual‍ tension that is a hallmark of‍ Denis’⁣ work.

Blyth ⁢plays Cal,‍ a volatile presence who disrupts the budding romance between Horn and Leonie, and becomes a suspect in the death of‍ a local worker. The victim’s brother, Alboury (Isaach de Bankolé, a frequent Denis collaborator), arrives seeking‌ justice, ⁤embodying a ‌quiet but powerful moral force. De ⁢bankolé’s performance is particularly striking, portraying Alboury as a figure who stands firmly ‍on the side of the marginalized,‍ refusing to allow the incident to be swept under ⁤the rug.

“The Fence” isn’t a cozy watch. It’s
