Max Scherzer Signs with Blue Jays: Veteran Pitcher Returns to Toronto

DUNEDIN, Fla. – Veteran pitcher Max Scherzer has agreed to a one-year contract with the Toronto Blue Jays, pending a physical examination, the team confirmed Thursday. The deal, reportedly worth $3 million with the potential to reach $10 million through bonuses, brings the three-time Cy Young Award winner back to a Blue Jays rotation already featuring Kevin Gausman, Dylan Cease, and Cody Ponce.

The agreement comes after Scherzer pitched for seven major league teams over an 18-season career, accumulating a 221-117 regular-season record and earning eight All-Star selections. He joined the Blue Jays last season, posting a 5-5 record with a 5.19 ERA and 82 strikeouts in 17 starts even as battling injuries. Despite those regular-season numbers, Scherzer delivered a key performance in the American League Championship Series, securing a Game 4 victory against the Seattle Mariners.

Blue Jays manager John Schneider expressed his enthusiasm for Scherzer’s return. “I am glad we were able to work out a deal,” Schneider said Thursday. “We know him and he can still help us win games. Hopefully he passes a physical and we’re looking forward to having him.” Schneider also revealed he had spoken with Scherzer on both Wednesday and Thursday morning.

Scherzer’s return to Toronto follows a 2025 season where he made a significant impact on the team’s culture, according to Davis Schneider. “He was just Max,” Davis Schneider recalled. “He was such a weirdo, to be honest. In a good way. He did his own thing. He did his thing the right way. He definitely put in the work. I mean he’s 41, about to be 42 and he’s still working hard. I respect him a lot and he brings a lot of energy to the clubhouse.”

The Blue Jays’ pursuit of Scherzer continued even after signing pitchers Dylan Cease and Cody Ponce, signaling a long-term approach to bolstering their pitching staff. While the exact role Scherzer will play remains uncertain, Schneider indicated a spot-starter role is more likely given the veteran’s age – he will turn 42 on July 27 – and recent workload of 85 innings pitched last year.

The Blue Jays’ rotation also includes José Berríos, who is working his way back from injuries, and Trey Yesavage. Eric Lauer is scheduled to make his second start of spring training on Friday. Schneider acknowledged the challenges of managing a deep pitching roster. “We’ll see,” he said regarding Scherzer’s integration. “He’s keeping himself ready, so we’ll have to sit down, look at what the rest of the calendar for spring looks like and travel from there. One of the things we do know about him is he’s very particular about routines, so we’ll hash that out when he gets here. I wish I could maintain everybody happy. Their play, their performance dictates it and everyone’s a big boy. They understand where we’re at.”

Scherzer has previously won World Series titles with the Houston Astros in 2019 and the Texas Rangers in 2023. He is 37 innings shy of reaching 3,000 for his career.
