Tongan Rugby Player Eli Katoaโข Undergoes Emergency Surgeryโค After Match incidents
Auckland, New Zealand – โฃ Tongan rugby league player Eli Katoa underwent emergency head surgery โคSunday nightโค after suffering three head impacts,โฃ including one during warm-ups and two during the Pacific Championships match against New Zealand. Katoa, a second-row forward,โ experienced convulsionsโฃ on the bench during the second half of the match, ultimatelyโ requiring hospitalizationโข and surgery.
Theโ Melbourne Storm playerโค was initially cleared โคto play at Eden Park despite a violent collision with a teammate during warm-up, reportedlyโ without undergoing a โคfull โคconcussion protocol. During the match,which New zealand won 40-14,Katoa sustained two further significant blows to the head. He initially passed aโค concussion assessment after theโ firstโข impact โin โthe game โbutโข was subsequently removed from โคthe โfieldโข following the second. Television footage showed theโข 25-year-old being fitted with โคan โoxygen mask and carried off on a stretcher.
“Eli Katoa was taken to hospital after suffering โconvulsionsโ on the bench โduring the second half ofโ the Pacific Championships match between Tongaโข and New Zealand,” the Melbourneโฃ Storm โคstated in a release Monday.The club confirmed Katoa was operatedโ on overnight and is โcurrently โin stable condition, with his partner andโ mother at his side. Storm medical staff are maintaining close contactโฃ with the hospitalโค and the Tongan team’s chief doctor.
Tongan coach Kristian Woolf defended the โteam’s medical staff, stating, “We have two very experienced doctors. They completed โtheir usual medical examination. Heโ passed all the tests,”โฃ according โto Australian media reports.
