Tomโฃ petty Considered โ”Southern Accents” Among His Greatest Compositions
LOSโค ANGELES, CA -โข Late musician tom Petty โbelieved his 1985 song “Southern Accents” to be “probably oneโ of my best two or threeโข things โฃthat โคI ever wrote,” according to a recent article published byโ faroutmagazine.co.uk. While known for โa songwriting processโค often driven by instinct and stream of consciousness, Petty โฃapproached “Southern Accents” with aโข pre-conceived thematic idea.
Pettyโข initially envisioned an album centered around Southern themes andโค music, leading to the creation of the album Southern Accents in 1985. Despite spending muchโค of his career in California, Petty was originally from Gainesville, Florida, โand the albumโ represented a return to his roots. โ
He โคrecalled writing theโค song โlate at โnight, between four and five in the morning, at the piano. Petty described being “extremely glad” when he reached the bridge of theโ song, so much so that โคhe woke โฃhis wife to share theโ moment with her as it wasโค being written.
“I do have a vague memory of beingโฃ extremely glad when I hit the bridge. I actually woke up myโฃ wife and made her listen to this song,” Pettyโ explained.โฃ He โfurther stated the song felt โ”very personal” and that it “just took me over.”
While Petty often allowed songs toโ flow โfrom him almost impulsively – famously completing “Wildflowers” in justโฃ three and a half minutes and barely recognizing โฃit as good until finished – “Southern Accents” benefitted from a starting point: the title itself. He generally trusted his instincts,โค often runningโ with the first idea that came to mind, โbut acknowledged โขthe occasional need for a guidingโค framework.
