Tokyo launches “Premium College” to Empower Lifelongโค Learningโ in Era of 100-year Lifespans
TOKYO – Tokyo Metropolitan Government (TMG) is pioneering โa new approach to aging populations with the launch of “Tokyo Premium College,” a lifelong learning initiative โdesignedโฃ to foster both skill development and social connection โfor residents. Governorโ Yuriko Koike recently highlighted the program’s importance, emphasizing that extended healthy lifespans-perhaps โreaching 120โข years-require notโข only knowledge and skills, but also strong human relationships for a fulfilling life.
The college addresses a growing societal challenge:โค how to support active and engaged citizensโข as life expectancy increases. This initiativeโ isn’t simply about acquiring new abilities; it’s about combating social isolation and providing โฃpurpose in later life.โ The TMG views โคTokyo’s Premium College as aโค potential model for otherโฃ regions and countries grappling with similar demographicโข shifts, and โits future development and policyโค impact will be closely monitored.
one student, Ms.โ Ide Michi, is using the college toโค explore a question sparked by her experiences living abroad: why traditional markets have largely disappeared from dailyโข life in โJapan, replaced by supermarkets. โฃShe is currently examining theโข current state of markets within Tokyo, alongside โฃfellowโค student Ms.Shimada Takeo.
The program’s success is โalready generating interest, with plans for expansion underway. Future articles will profile โขinspiring alumni and showcase the diverse โpaths graduates areโ pursuing after completing theirโ studies at Tokyo Premium College. Further details can be found here.
