Chimpanzees Consume Alcohol equivalent toโข Multiple โDrinks Daily,โข Study Finds
Researchers from the โฃUniversity ofโ California, Berkeley, have discovered that wild chimpanzees ingest a meaningful amount of ethanol through their natural diet of fruit. The findings,published in Science Advances,reveal that chimpanzees likely consume around โค14 grams of pure โethanol daily – the โequivalent of a โคstandard alcoholic โฃdrink in the United States.
The study involved measuring ethanol content in 21 species โof fruit available to chimpanzees at โขtwo researchโข sites: Ngogo in Uganda โคand Taรฏ in Ivory Coast. The averageโ alcoholic graduation of the sampled fruits was โ0.26% by โฃweight.โ Considering chimpanzees consumeโข approximately 4.5 kilograms ofโข fruit per day, constitutingโค roughly three-quarters of their diet, researchers were ableโฃ to โcalculate their โฃaverage ethanol intake.
Adjusting for body mass – chimpanzees averageโ around 40 kilograms compared to โขa typical human’sโข 70โค kilograms – the equivalent consumption for a human would be nearlyโ two โalcoholic drinks per day.
“Inโค all sites, male and female chimpanzees consume โขabout 14 grams of pureโ ethanol perโ day in their diet,” explained Aleksey Maro, aโค postgraduate student at UC Berkeley’sโค Department of Integrative โBiology.
Researchers note that while it’s unclear if chimpanzees actively seek โout โคfruits with โขhigher ethanol levels (frequently enoughโ found in more โขmature, fermenting fruits), the โขwidespread availability of ethanol in their diet suggests that our human ancestors โฃwere likelyโ similarly exposed โฃto alcohol from fermented fruits.
Professor Robert Dudley, โofโ UC Berkeley’s Department of Integrative Biology, emphasized the impact of consistent fruit consumption. “Chimpanzees consume between 5 and 10% of their body weight per โคday in ripe fruit, so even โlow concentrations produce a high daily total: a substantial dose of alcohol.” He added that the calculated intake represents a conservative estimate, as chimpanzees may preferentially select fruits โขwith higher sugar content and, therefore, higher โฃethanol levels.
despite โthis consistent intake, chimpanzees do not exhibit obvious signs of intoxication. Maroโ explained that a โchimpanzee would need to โconsume an excessive amount of fruitโค toโ become visibly drunk. Though, this chronic, low-level exposureโ suggests a potential evolutionary โlink โbetween โalcohol consumption and the dietary habits of โour sharedโข ancestors โขwith โchimpanzeesโ – our โคclosest living โrelatives among the apes.
Maroโค concluded, “Chimpanzees consume an amount of alcohol similarโ to what we would consume if we ate fermented foods. Human attraction for alcohol probably arose from โขthis dietary inheritance โof our common ancestor with chimpanzees.”
