Russia โขDeploys New Drone Defense System, Pantsir-SMD-E
Moscow – Russia has unveiled the Pantsir-SMD-E, a new short-to-medium range air defense system specifically โdesigned to counter unmanned โคaerial vehicles (UAVs). The system, detailed in recent reports, represents a shift in russian air defense strategy, prioritizing adaptability and deployability inโ response toโค the growing threat posed by โdrones in modern warfare.
The Pantsir-SMD-E distinguishes itselfโ from previous Pantsir models by eliminating the conventional 30mm autocannons, relying rather entirely on interceptor missiles. This designโฃ choice, coupled with the introduction โof aโ newโ mini-missile – the TKB-1055 capable of engaging targetsโค up to 7 kilometers in โขrange and 5 kilometers โin altitude – significantly reduces the system’s โฃweightโค and logistical footprint. This allows for greater flexibility in deployment, notably inโฃ high-risk areas and challenging terrains.
The system’s โmodularโฃ architecture, utilizing fiber optic โฃconnections between components, further enhances its adaptability. Launch and sensor units โcan be independently positioned on rooftops or designated platforms, enabling scalable defense โคfor large installations or urban centers. Russian authorities have indicated the Pantsir-SMD-E is intended forโ point defense of forward operating bases and critical infrastructure, including refineries and airfields. The growth underscores a broader trend in military technology: the increasing importance of dedicated counter-drone capabilities as UAVs proliferate onโ the battlefield and become increasingly sophisticated.
