MIT Professor Cancelsโ Israeli โคMilitary Grant Following Student Protests
CAMBRIDGE, MA โค – An MIT professor has canceled โขa research grant funded by the Israeli military โafter sustained pressure fromโ student activists protesting โฃthe ongoingโ conflict in Gaza, accordingโฃ to members of the MIT Coalition for Palestine. The cancellation marks a partial victory for students who haveโ been โคcalling on โคthe university to disclose and sever ties with military-funded research.
The grant โขcancellation comes amid increasing โคscrutiny of MIT’s financial relationships โฃwith โthe Israeli military and a broader debateโฃ over academicโค freedom โand โฃinstitutional duty in โthe face of โฃinternational conflict. Students have argued that researchโฃ fundingโค from the Israeli military contributes to โคviolenceโฃ in โPalestine, while MIT administrators have defended the partnerships as vital to academic inquiry and national security.
MIT initially removed โits “Brown Book,” whichโ detailedโค its sponsored research, in July โ2024, citing aโข need to align with federal requirements and “typical” disclosures, as reported byโข The tech, MIT’s student newspaper. Accordingโฃ to MIT Coalition for Palestine member, โMayaโฃ Halgren, the removalโ of the โขBrown Book and โขanother grant database has created a lack of transparency regarding the university’s funding sources. “There are โnow no sources for MIT community members to โฃsee who funds our school’s โresearch,” โคHalgren stated.
Students began protesting โgenocide in Gaza and calling for the university to drop Israeli military-funded research last โฃspring.โฃ MIT Presidentโค Sally Kornbluth responded in a July statement, characterizing criticismsโ of researchers working on these projects as “willful mischaracterizations,” and assertingโ that suggestionsโค their work was designed for โขconflictโฃ were “untrue.”
Despite cutting tiesโค withโฃ other countries over human rights concerns, MIT hasโฃ maintained that itโ hasโข “compelling reasons”โ not to sever โฃties with the Israeli military, as reported โขby โค The Intercept in โJanuary โ2025.
“One contract is โขdown, butโค we won’t stop โคuntil MIT โannounces aโ full โresearch stoppageโ for the Israeli military,” Halgren said. “Asโ a military scienceโ school, MIT students and staff have a unique responsibilityโฃ to stand up โto the U.S.-Israeli war machine and prevent more โhorrifying violence in โPalestine.”
