Mackay Hospital Chief โขExecutive โขSuspendedโฃ for Over aโ Year,โฃ Inquiry Finds Recruitment oversight Lacking
MACKAY, QLD – Teh chief executive of Mackay Hospital โขand Health Service (HHS), Dr.โฃ David Pain, was suspended on full pay for more thanโค a year while an investigation took place, culminating in โaโ report that found deficiencies โin senior doctor recruitment processes but no wrongdoing by Dr. Pain โhimself.
Dr. Pain was โขsuspended in February 2024, following aโ complaint. He beganโ his role in Mackay in October 2022,โค after the results of an investigationโค into obstetricsโข and gynaecology services where released. He was tasked โขwith implementingโฃ 122โข recommendations from that investigation, acting โas interim chief executive and chairing a working group to rebuild trust in the hospital.
“Dr. Pain accepted a role โขthat few others were qualified to undertake: โreconstructing corporateโ and clinical governance and building a โculture that delivered โa safe, efficient and equitableโ health service to the community at a time when โtrust in theโ hospital had been considerably eroded,” said Dr.Senthuran, a colleague.
Following Dr. Pain’s suspension, an investigation into seniorโ doctorโข recruitment and credentialing โat โคthe Mackay HHSโ was launched in January 2025. The six-month investigation identified one instance โof inadequate oversight and โmade 11โ recommendations for improving administrative procedures.
The report specifically stated it made no findings against Dr. Pain.โข Investigators also resolute the โChief Medical Officer (CMO) role lacked direct oversight โคand โคoperational authority over Seniorโ Medical โขOfficer (SMO) โrecruitment – a functionโ the investigators believed should be central โคto the โคCMO’s responsibilities.
Dr.โค Senthuran calledโข for stronger โsafeguards from the health minister and director-general โto ensure fair, โproportionate, and accountable processes for inquiriesโ and suspensions, “so that these powersโ are exercisedโ fairly, proportionately, and with accountability”.
