The Environmental Catastrophe of the Kakhovka Dam Destruction in Ukraine

by Chief editor of world-today-news.com June 8, 2023
written by Chief editor of world-today-news.com

Destruction of ecosystems, floods, pollution, threats to energy supplies… Experts and environmental organizations have warned that the destruction of the Kakhovka Dam, In southern Ukraine, Tuesday could have unprecedented environmental and human consequences.

Kherson region governor Oleksandr Prokudin said on social media that floods caused by the destruction of the Kakhovka Dam have submerged an area of more than 600 square kilometers on the right bank of the Dnipro River which is controlled by the Ukrainians as well as on the left bank which is occupied by the Russians, a Ukrainian governor said Thursday..

“brutal ecocide” according to Kiev

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky denounced what he called “the largest man-made ecological disaster in Europe in decades”, accusing Russia of “brutal ecocide”.

The term “ecocide”, as recently defined by the European Parliament, is every “environmental criminal offense that causes serious, widespread, permanent or irreversible damage to air, soil and water quality, to biodiversity, to ecosystem services and functions, to fauna or flora”.

The dam was holding 18 billion tons of water

The Ukrainian NGO “Eco Action” fears that the first consequences of the collapse of the 18 billion tons of water that the dam was holding will be a serious disruption of the ecosystems in the Dnipro River (the fourth longest river in Europe) all the way to the coastal areas on the shores of the Black Sea.

>> Read also: What are the repercussions of the Nova Kakhovka Dam bombing?

It also fears a possible mortality rate for aquatic organisms (fish, molluscs, shellfish, microorganisms and aquatic plants), which “will lead to a deterioration in water quality as a result of the decomposition of dead organisms.”

In turn, the Ukrainian group for nature conservation considered that the consequences for animals “will appear on an area of not less than five thousand square kilometers (the area that may be flooded and the area from which it will withdraw)”.

And she believed that with regard to fish alone, she would appoint “at least seven to ten years to compensate” for the losses, and these areas would be devoid of nesting birds around the dam such as seagulls and others, warning that “all living creatures that inhabit the Kakhovka reservoir have died or will die in the coming days.” .

Eco Action indicated that the plants will not be immune from danger, especially in the areas above the dam, where “they will die due to the depletion of water, while the water will flood the areas below the dam, including the steppes and forests that are not prepared to be submerged, which will lead to saturation of their soil.” and destroy it.”

There is also a direct danger to a number of Ukrainian national reserves, most notably the Black Sea Reserve, which is classified on the UNESCO Global Network of Biosphere Reserves.

Heavy pollution? Also expected consequences are heavy pollution from the spread of waste, agricultural chemicals and other hazardous materials, and disruption of wastewater treatment and sewage systems.

What do we know about the Kakhovka Dam, which was bombed and partially destroyed?

The destruction of the dam, according to Ukrainian officials, caused more than 150 tons of motor oil to leak into the Dnipro River, “with the risk of an additional 300 tons leaking,” which poses a “danger to animals and plants.”

This pollution is expected to reach the Black Sea, which could threaten a wide range of organisms, from plankton to whales.

A major threat to the water supply of millions of people

Ukraine’s Attorney General Andriy Kostin announced that “more than 40,000 people may be in flooded areas”, announcing mass evacuations.

The Kakhovka Dam was also used to supply drinking and irrigation water to southern Ukraine, which is one of the driest regions in the country. Consequently, its destruction poses a major threat to the water supply of millions of people.

The dam’s water is used to cool fuel for the Zaporizhia Nuclear Power Plant

face Zaporizhia Nuclear Power Plant Russia occupies new risks due to the destruction of the dam whose water is used to cool fuel and avoid a nuclear accident.

However, the French Institute for Radiation Protection and Nuclear Safety reassured that “the cooling of the station is currently provided by water pumped from basins on the site, which were established for this purpose. There are no risks in the short term for the station.”

“The absence of cooling for the six reactors means that the station will not operate in the foreseeable future, which will cause a loss of about 13% of Ukraine’s electricity generation capacity,” said Malte Jansen of the Business School at the University of Sussex.

Damage will also affect agriculture and livestock breeding, which threatens a human catastrophe, as Ukraine is one of the largest exporters of grain in the world.

He would gather Putin and Zelensky in a room and tell them, respectively: “You will get nothing if you don’t negotiate” and “They will get a lot if you don’t negotiate”

In no more than 24 hours I will solve the entire conflict in Ukraine and this terrible war will end. Such a request was made by former US President Donald Trump, who officially launched his election campaign for a new term in the Oval Office about a month ago. He revealed that the death toll in Ukraine on both sides of the conflict is far greater than what is officially being reported to Americans and the world through the media, and this must stop.

Asked how exactly he would stop the war for a day, Trump was adamant that he knew both presidents in Kiev and Moscow and would just have to bring them to the same table. “I get along with both of them – Zelensky and Putin. It would have been much easier to stop the war before it started. Putin would never do what he did. Now it’s a disaster. Now they’re hitting Kiev and all sorts of other things they shouldn’t be hitting. The country is destroyed. Telling you that 9 apartments were destroyed and two were injured… no, no. There are hundreds. The numbers are much different than what is officially said. I’m going to get the presidents in a room and I know exactly what I’m going to do. You say to one “You won’t get anything if you don’t negotiate”, and to the other – “They will get a lot if you don’t negotiate”. And that’s it,” Donald Trump revealed his plan.

He emphasized again that what was described could happen within 24 hours. But in order to be able to persuade him, he needs the power of the president. “You can’t just go and say, ‘I’m solving the problem.’ You need to be in the Oval Office. This is a war that should never have started in the first place. A terrible war. Today I watched rockets hit Kyiv. And then you see kids going to school in the background. The whole thing is terrible and I’ll solve it in a day,” Trump lashed out.

“Russian Forces Launch Offensive in Donetsk Region, Ukraine Prepares for Counter-Offensive”

by Chief editor of world-today-news.com May 24, 2023

Ukraine has accumulated the necessary minimum of weapons to launch a counter-offensive “in the near future”

The Russian armed forces have gone on the offensive in the Donetsk region to capture Avdeevka.

They are observed there on the spot fierce battles, Telegram channels report.

“Between the villages of Vodiane and Pervomaiskoe, as well as Pervomaiskoe and Nevelskoe, the armed forces of the Russian Federation are attacking to break through the defense of the armed forces of Ukraine,” the publication notes.

According to military correspondents, Ukrainian military analysts have recognized the successes of Russian servicemen in the Avdeevka direction.

Russian army managed to advance on the railroad tracks and take control of two forest ranges and part of a forest belt with two junctions.

Fighting was observed north of Krasnokhorovka and west of the village of Novobakhmutivka. In addition, the fighters of the Armed Forces of Ukraine have begun to transfer reserves and are also trying to conduct a counterattack in some areas to regain lost positions.

On the eve it was reported that the Russian military captured three fighters from the 93rd Brigade of the Armed Forces of Ukraine “Kholodny Yar”. The Ukrainian soldiers were taken to a prisoner of war camp.

Ukraine has accumulated the necessary minimum of weapons to launch a counteroffensive and it will begin “in the near future.”

This was stated by the head of the Main Intelligence Directorate (GUR) of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine, Kyrylo Budanov, in an interview with NHK.

At the same time he added that Kyiv still needs of “a large stock of arms and ammunition” to continue hostilities.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky Attends G7 Summit After US Green-Light for F-16s

by Chief editor of world-today-news.com May 20, 2023
written by Chief editor of world-today-news.com

receipt Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelensky Saturday to Hiroshima to participate in the works G7 summitafter he got a US green light to supply his country with the advanced F-16 warplanes that Kiev desperately demands and also to train Ukrainian pilots.

And at Hiroshima airport, the French plane carrying Zelensky from Saudi Arabia, where he went to attend the Arab League summit, landed on Friday, and a red carpet was laid, according to AFP correspondents.

Why Zelensky participate in the summit of the Group of Seven?

This trip would be an opportunity to consult with allies such as President Joe Biden, but also to draw in major non-aligned powers at the summit including India and Brazil, who have refused to condemn Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and are also likely to be prime targets for Zelensky’s diplomacy.

The unexpected visit also comes, after he previously announced his participation via video call, following a breakthrough in his relentless efforts to convince Washington of his country’s need for F-16 fighters. Momentum has been building to supply Ukraine with these planes, but Washington’s support is essential because its consent is legally necessary for the re-export of US equipment bought by allies.

Zelensky said Saturday that “peace will be closer” as a result of the G7 summit meetings, after a diplomatic source confirmed his arrival in Hiroshima. The Ukrainian president said in a post on the communication platforms: “Japan. The G7. Important meetings with partners and friends of Ukraine. Intensive security and cooperation so that we can win. Today peace will be closer.”

Seven summit .. Ukraine and thorny issues

The United States has previously cited long and expensive pilot training periods as reasons for not delivering the warplanes, with officials insisting there are more cost-effective ways to bolster Kiev’s air defenses. But now it seems likely that the F-16s will join the list of advanced systems, including Western tanks and long-range weapons, that Ukraine’s allies agreed to supply after initial hesitation.

And Friday, Biden told the leaders G7 in Japan Washington will now support the request, a move Zelensky hailed as a “historic decision”. Zelensky said he would meet with Biden in Hiroshima to discuss “practical implementation” of the plan, and the White House said Biden was “looking forward” to the talks, without setting a date.

Also, National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan stressed that the decision regarding the planes did not reflect a shift in US policy. He told reporters in Hiroshima: “Nothing has changed. Our approach to providing weapons, equipment and training to the Ukrainians followed the exigencies of the conflict.”

Zelensky’s presence in Hiroshima will have major implications for the remaining two days of the summit, as Ukraine will steal the spotlight from a long list of other thorny issues, including addressing concerns about China’s growing military and economic power.

The seven countries strengthen their support for Ukraine

On the other hand, the Japanese Foreign Ministry said that Zelensky will participate in talks on Ukraine with the leaders of the Group of Seven on Sunday, in addition to a session on “peace and stability”, which will also include non-member countries invited to the summit. It is scheduled that the Ukrainian President will also hold bilateral meetings in Hiroshima with French President Emmanuel Macron and Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida.

The Group of Seven had announced earlier new sanctions against Moscow, and pledged Friday to “starve” the Russian “war machine”.

“Economic coercion and the weaponization of trade”

Saturday’s sessions will address “economic coercion” and how to diversify key sectors and supply chains. “What we’ve done over the past 20 years with China to encourage development has been right, but maybe we should have been more careful about vital materials and supply chains and those elements,” an EU official said. The same source added, “I think the goal of all G7 leaders is to say that China has pursued a systematic policy of acquiring important raw materials and controlling supply chains (…) and we are responding to that through diversification.”

And the leaders of the Group of Seven warned on Saturday that any attempts to “weaponize” trade and supply chains “will fail and will face consequences,” in a veiled warning to Beijing about its economic practices. “Attempts to weaponize economic dependencies by forcing G7 members and our partners, including small economies, to respond and comply will fail and face consequences,” the group said in a statement, which did not directly mention China.

Earlier Saturday, the US national security adviser said the G7 would agree on a “common set of tools” to combat economic “coercion” and reduce the risk of high-tech exports to China undermining national security.

This, and will hold talks with non-member countries amid trying G-7 leaders to convince developing countries of its ability to provide diplomatic and economic alternatives to countries such as China.

It’s getting scary: The war is moving to the West – Poland is building fortifications…

by Chief editor of world-today-news.com March 10, 2023
written by Chief editor of world-today-news.com

VSU responded to Stoltenberg about the fall of Bakhmut

Poland began building fortifications along the border with Belarus on March 9.

This was announced by the Deputy Prime Minister, Head of the Ministry of National Defense of Poland Mariusz Blaszczak in his Twitter microblog. He posted photos showing military personnel placing anti-tank hedgehogs at the border.

“In February, the construction of security structures on the border with the Kaliningrad region began. Today, the military began the construction of fortifications on the border with Belarus. This is part of our defense and deterrence strategy,” Blaszczak wrote, quoted by UNIAN.

In 2021, Lithuania, Latvia, Poland and Estonia accused Lukashenko of a hybrid attack on European countries with the help of illegal migrants.

In February this year, Poland announced that the number of illegal migrants at the border was rising again.

Last summer, Lithuania fenced itself off from Belarus with the help of a fence about 550 kilometers long. Back in the fall, they announced that they had fixed multiple cases of intentional damage to this barrier.

In June, Poland built 186.25 kilometers of fence along the border with Belarus. In addition, their plans include the construction of a fence and a surveillance system on the border with the Kaliningrad region.

The press secretary of the Eastern Group of the Ukrainian Armed Forces Sergey Cherevatiy said that the NATO generals do not understand everything that is happening in Bakhmut and say that the city’s defenses may fall in the next few days. Thus, he commented on the words of the Secretary General of the Alliance, Jens Stoltenberg, that this settlement will soon come under the control of Russian troops.

“It is difficult for NATO to fully understand the logic. They approach purely pragmatically, with dry calculations, sometimes not realizing that Ukrainians have developed much greater resilience, non-standard actions and capacity for tactical decisions during the year of the armed conflict,” Cherevaty said on the air of the Ukrainian telethon and was quoted by foreign agencies .

However, as the spokesperson of the Eastern Group of the ASU added, it is necessary to treat such statements with respect and understanding, since all situations are not fully understood by people in the alliance. Cherevatiy reminded that earlier in NATO they counted the hours until the fall of Kiev.

The agencies recall that Russian troops have already occupied the entire eastern part of Bakhmut. This was announced earlier by the press service of the founder of “Wagner” Yevgeny Prigozhin.

The units of the Russian army began to consolidate on the outskirts of Krasnogorovka, an officer with the call sign Simon told the agencies. Krasnogorovka often appears in the archives of the DPR as a settlement from which Donetsk was fired upon.

“Grad” and “Solntsepek” worked in the suburbs of Krasnogorovka. On the first street of this settlement, the boys of the 11th regiment are already entrenched,” said the interlocutor of the agency.

The joint use of “Grad” and “Solntsepek” is used to clear the way for the advancing troops. “Solntsepek” disables lightly armored vehicles, destroys fortifications and facilities. MLRS “City” is used to destroy manpower.

The fighting near Avdeevka eased the fate of the residents of Donetsk. Ukraine’s armed forces are busy holding off Russian forces and are less likely to shell the city from that direction. From Avdeevka and Krasnogorovka, located to the north of it, Ukrainian fighters most often shell the capital of the DPR, the agencies write.

The Russian army broke through the Ukrainian defense in the south, entered Pob…

written by Chief editor of world-today-news.com

In Mariinka, Russian troops are advancing through the ruins and fighting positional battles in other areas, world media reported.

Russian armored groups and assault infantry have broken through the enemy’s defenses south of the regional center Mariinka and are storming the village of Pobeda.

Russian fighters reportedly invaded the outskirts of the village and stormed the first buildings. If Pobeda falls, then the defense of the Armed Forces of Ukraine south of Mariinka will begin to crumble.

Ukrainian military analysts acknowledge problems on this section of the front, saying that fighting continues in the forest area east of Pobeda. Northeast of Pobeda, Russian troops attacked a section of highway O0532 in several directions.

From the report of the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, it is reported that in the Avdeev direction, the Russian army is advancing in the direction of the settlements of Krasnogorovka, Kamenka, Avdeevka, Severnoe, Pervomayskoe, Nevelskoe, Mariinka and Pobeda.

Under fire are positions of the Armed Forces of Ukraine in the areas near the front line, including Tonenkoe and Vodyanoe.
