Japan Considers Sending Air Defense to the United States, Upsetting Russia and Impacting Ukraine

After its defeat in World War II, Japan imposed strict rules on arms exports. Japan is today an important ally for the United States, but has not directly contributed weapons to Ukraine.

Now Japan is considering sending air defense to the United States, and this upsets Russia. Ukraine is struggling to get enough anti-aircraft missiles to stop Russian attacks, and the US and the West are struggling to produce enough ammunition.

Japan is sitting on a large quantity of “Patriot” missiles, which it is now considering sending back to the United States. Patriot is an American-developed air defense system, and in Ukraine this has proven to be extremely effective.

Listen to Nettavisen’s podcast about Russia’s war against Ukraine here:

Just before Christmas, Ukraine reported that they shot down three Russian fighter jets on the same day, and it is assumed that the Patriot system was behind this.

The missiles that Japan now wants to send to the United States will not end up in Ukraine, but if the United States gets hold of them, the Americans can send a similar amount to Ukraine, without compromising American preparedness.

– It will have serious consequences for the relationship between Japan and Russia, warns spokeswoman for the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs Maria Zakharova, reports the Danish newspaper Berlingske.

Ukraine President Calls for Massive Nuclear Disarmament in Russia

by Chief editor of world-today-news.com September 19, 2023
written by Chief editor of world-today-news.com

Ukraine gave up its third largest nuclear arsenal. Then the world decided that Russia should become the guardian of this power. However, history shows that it is Russia that deserves the most massive nuclear disarmament. And Russia deserves it even now – terrorists have no right to possess nuclear weapons. This was stated by the President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky at the beginning of his speech to the UN General Assembly.

“But as long as nuclear weapons remain in place, mass destruction accelerates. Russia is weaponizing many other things that are used not only against our country, but against all your countries. Many conventions restrict weapons, but there are no real restrictions on the use of food or roads as weapons,” he pointed out.

“Russia has blockaded our Black Sea and Azov ports and continues to direct missiles and drones at our Danube ports. It is trying to weaponize global food shortages in exchange for recognition of some, if not all, captured territories. Russia is using food and fuel prices as a weapon,” Zelensky said.

“Many times the world has witnessed how Russia uses energy as a weapon. Now the threat is even greater. Russia uses nuclear energy as a weapon. Look at what Russia has done to our nuclear power plant in Zaporozhye – shelled it, occupied it and now blackmails others with radiation leaks,” the Ukrainian president stressed.

“Various terrorist groups abduct children, but never before has their mass abduction and deportation been part of government policy. Not until now. Stolen Ukrainian children in Russia are taught to hate Ukraine. All ties with their families are severed. This is genocide,” he categorically stated.

“Ukraine is doing everything possible to make sure that after the Russian aggression, no one in the world will dare to attack any country. Armaments must be limited. War crimes must be punished. Deported people must return home. The occupiers must return to their own land,” said Zelensky, quoted by BGNES.

Poland and Baltic States Demand Belarus to Expel Russian Military Group Wagner

Poland and Baltic States Demand Belarus to Expel Russian Military Group Wagner

by Chief editor of world-today-news.com August 28, 2023
written by Chief editor of world-today-news.com

days after the killing Leader of the Russian military group WagnerPoland and the three Baltic states (Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia) demanded that Belarus expel the group “immediately”. The countries justified this request by security concerns in light of accusations against the group’s fighters of committing crimes in Ukraine, while Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko expressed his country’s desire to increase the number of Wagner fighters in Belarus, which they arrived after the group’s failed rebellion against Russia.

“We have asked (Belarusian President Alexander) Lukashenko’s regime to immediately expel the Wagner Group from Belarus,” Polish Interior Minister Mariusz Kaminski said after meeting his counterparts from the Baltic states, all of which share borders with Belarus except for Estonia.

Thousands of Wagner mercenaries are stationed in Belarus, and the country’s president recently expressed his desire to increase this number to 10,000, according to the Polish authorities.

Kaminsky emphasized that “a few thousand, including criminals, were released from Russian prisons in return for a promise to participate in the war on Ukraine. They are frustrated and accused of war crimes. It is a large group capable of doing anything.”

The Polish minister added, “They should leave our region, international security requires that. We are afraid of incidents, including armed incidents with the participation of these mercenaries.”

Kamensky warned the Belarusian authorities that “in the event of a serious incident on the border with Belarus, all border crossings that are still open” with this country will be closed.

On the other hand, the ministers asked Belarus to “immediately return all illegal immigrants from the border area to their countries of origin,” accusing the Belarusian services of gathering them there.

The countries of the region accuse Belarus and Russia of orchestrating a wave of immigration aimed, according to it, at destabilizing the region and the entire European Union, which Moscow and Minsk deny.

Qatar to Provide $100 Million in Humanitarian Aid to Ukraine

by Chief editor of world-today-news.com July 28, 2023
written by Chief editor of world-today-news.com

Prime Minister confirmed Ukrainian Dennis Schmihal announced today, Friday, that Qatar will provide his country with humanitarian aid worth $100 million.

The Qatari prime minister, who also serves as foreign minister, said he was scheduled to meet President Volodymyr Zelensky later Friday.

“These funds will be directed to reconstruction in the health and education sectors, demining for humanitarian purposes, and other important social and humanitarian projects,” Shmihal said in a joint press statement.

He added that they discussed a formula for peace in Ukraine, which is a ten-point plan calling for nuclear security, energy and food security, restoring borders, among other points.

Shmyhal thanked Qatar for its willingness to mediate efforts to return thousands of Ukrainian children who have been transferred to Russia since the invasion.

Moscow says it wants to protect orphans and children left behind in the conflict zone. But Ukraine says many of them were deported illegally, and the United States says thousands of children have been forcibly taken from their homes.

Ukraine Receives Donation of Nasams Air Defense Systems from USA, Norway, and Canada

by Chief editor of world-today-news.com June 28, 2023

Nauseda, who is visiting Kyiv on Wednesday, announced the purchase in a video message on Tuesday night.

The “Norwegian/National Advanced Surface to Air Missile System” (Nasams) is produced by Kongsberg Defense & Aerospace (KDA) in collaboration with the American Raytheon, and a contract has already been signed between Lithuania, the Norwegian authorities and the arms company.

Lithuania itself has since 2020 used Nasams which were ordered from Norway and KDA in 2016 and 2017.

USA, Norway and Canada

Eleven Nasams systems have already been donated to Ukraine.

The first two were put into use in Ukraine in November 2022 and belonged to the donation the USA announced last summer, with assistance from Norway for training and some material.

In August last year, the US announced that it would acquire six more Nasams systems from industry through the USAI (Ukraine Security Assistance Initiative) scheme, prompting the Ukrainian Ministry of Defense to publish a video praising Nasams and thanking Norway.

Canada also announced earlier in 2023 that it will set aside approximately NOK three billion to acquire a Nasams system for Ukraine. The Canadians do not have Nasams themselves, so this is also air defense that is ordered from industry.

As Teknisk Ukeblad understands it, it is Canadian earmarked funds that are the basis for Ukraine being in the process of ordering the air defense itself.

In May, the Defense Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA), which is part of the US Department of Defense, announced that the US State Department had approved FMS exports by Nasams to Ukraine.

There are currently 13 nations that use, or are in the process of using, Nasams: Australia, Chile, Finland, Indonesia, Lithuania, the Netherlands, Norway, Oman, Qatar, Spain, Ukraine, Hungary and the USA.

Last week, Nasams went top in the Norwegian Tech Awards.

110 Million People Forced to Flee Due to Global Conflicts, UN Reports

by Chief editor of world-today-news.com June 14, 2023
written by Chief editor of world-today-news.com

The United Nations announces that the number of refugees and displaced persons in the world has reached a record, with an increase of about two million people displaced by the war that broke out in Sudan.

In its annual report, the United Nations announced that the number of forcibly displaced people around the world has jumped to a record high of 110 million people. And the situation in Ukraine and Sudan is forcing millions to flee their homes.

The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees said that the number, which was 108.4 million people at the end of last year, increased by 19.1 million from what it was at the end of 2019, which is an unprecedented increase.

The organization added that the recent conflict in Sudan has exacerbated the situation, which had already become exceptional in 2022, due to the war in Ukraine and the humanitarian crisis in Afghanistan.

The Forced Displacement Report also showed that over the two decades preceding the Syrian conflict that broke out in 2011, the global level was roughly stable at about 40 million refugees and internally displaced persons, but it has been increasing annually since then, and has now more than doubled.

For his part, UNHCR chief Filippo Grandi told a press conference in Geneva: “This is where we are today. We have 110 million people who have fled because of conflict, persecution, discrimination and violence, often in addition to other motives, especially the impact of climate change. This is an indictment of the state of our world.”

Grandi added: “The prevailing discourse is still that all refugees go to rich countries. This is wrong in fact, what is happening is the exact opposite. 70% of refugees, that is 35 million, flee to the country next to their own. Most of them want to go home. This is The numbers tell a completely different story than what we hear constantly, especially from some politicians.”

The UNHCR stated that 35.3 million people are refugees, and 62.5 million are displaced out of the total number registered in 2022. It indicated that 5.4 million asylum seekers and 5.2 million others need international protection.

The High Commissioner said that all these people are now facing a more hostile environment, especially the refugees, and he referred to the attack launched by the Syrian refugee in the French city of Annecy: “What we need to avoid is generalization, some have said that refugees are killing children, and I read phrases such as + Genocide+ and +murderers of the French+ This is hate speech, and I hope no one uses it.”
