Russia Launches Strikes on Ukrainian โInfrastructure as Battles Rage โฃNear Pokrovsk
Russia conducted โขovernight strikes targeting โขUkrainian infrastructure it deems critical to teh war effort, accordingโข to a statement from the General Staff of the โคArmed Forces of Ukraine. โคThe attacks included an oil refinery in Russia’s ryazan region and aโข military contingent in the occupied partโฃ of Ukraine’sโ Zaporizhzhya region.
Fighting is especially intense around the city ofโ Pokrovsk in โขthe eastern Donetsk โregion, where 265 clashesโ between Russian and Ukrainian forces occurred in the โlast 24 hours. Nearly half of thes engagements tookโฃ placeโข in and around โPokrovsk, a key transportation hub threatened with encirclement by Russian forces forโ much of the year.
Russia’sโ Defense Ministry claimed โon Novemberโ 15th that its forces captured the village of Yablukove in the zaporizhzhya region, though this claim remains โฃunverified.
Ukrainian military leadership is focused on stabilizing the situation around Pokrovsk. Generalโค Oleksandr Syrskiy, Ukraine’s top military commander, recently visited units โขdefending the city, stating Ukraine’sโข objectives are to regain control โof areas, protect and establish supply and evacuation routes. “There is no โquestion โฃof Russian controlโข overโฃ the cityโ of Pokrovsk or of the operational encirclement of Ukraine’s defence forces in the area,” Syrskiy said during his November 13th visit.
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy indicated he โwould support a withdrawal from Pokrovsk if commanders on the ground deem it necessary, prioritizing the safety of Ukrainian โsoldiers. “No one is forcing them โto dieโ for โขthe sake ofโค ruins. I will support our soldiers, especially theโค commanders โwho areโ there, in how they can control the situation, or if it’s too expensive for us. The most meaningful thing for us isโ our soldiers,” Zelenskyy told Bloomberg inโฃ a โฃrecent interview.
Russianโฃ forces have reportedly pushed Ukrainian โคtroops out of surrounding townsโข and โvillages south of Pokrovsk, โฃwhich currently โคhas a population of approximately โฃ7,000, a significant decrease from the โฃoverโข 60,000 โฃresidents beforeโฃ Russia’sโ full-scale invasion inโ 2022.
Capturing the area around Pokrovsk would provide Russia with a โstrategic foothold to launch further offensives towards Kramatorskโข and Slovyansk, the two largest remaining Ukrainian-controlled cities in โฃthe donetsk region.
The Institute for the Study โฃof War,a Washington-based โthink tank, assessed that Russianโข forces are continuing to advance aroundโ Pokrovsk, but the extent of their strategic gainโ will depend on โhow Ukraine responds and manages aโ potential withdrawal. “Russian forces will likely collapse the pocket โaround pokrovsk and Myrnohrad, but the significance of โฃseizing these towns will depend on the โcircumstances and conduct of theโค Ukrainian withdrawal,” the Institute reported on November 14th.
