European Nations, Allies urge Ceasefire in Gaza Amidst Growing Humanitarian Crisis
A significant bloc of European countries, alongside Canada, Australia, and New Zealand, have publicly called for an end to the conflict in Gaza and for increased humanitarian aid. This joint appeal, which includes four of the five “Five Eyes” intelligence-sharing nations, marks a notable stance from countries traditionally aligned with Israel and its key supporter, the United States.
The joint statement from the foreign ministers of these nations declared that “the model of providing Israeli government is dangerous, triggers instability, and deprives the dignity of people of Gazans,” adding that “The suffering of civilians in Gaza has reached its lowest point.”
However, the Israeli Foreign Ministry has pushed back against the statement, characterizing it as “not in accordance with reality” and potentially sending an inappropriate message to Hamas.Israel’s response asserted that the statement “failed to focus the pressure on Hamas and failed to recognise Hamas’s role and responsibility for the situation.”
Following the joint statement, Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon saar reportedly spoke with his British counterpart, David Lammy, to discuss regional matters, including Gaza. Saar reiterated Israel’s position, attributing the suffering of residents and the continuation of the war to Hamas.
The United states Ambassador to Israel, Mike Huckabee, also voiced strong disapproval of the statement, calling it “disgusting” and deeming any blame directed at Israel as irrational, citing Hamas’s rejection of all proposals to end the conflict.
