NEW YORK — Although it will feel like summer in the New York City area in the coming days, the skies are taking a hit as air quality drops again.

The haze returned Monday as smoke from wildfires burning in Canada returned to the city. Smoke will linger through Tuesday and possibly Wednesday, but don’t expect things to get as bad as they did during the summer.

Smoke and haze are likely to remain much higher in the air than in June and July, meaning impacts won’t be as severe for those on the ground. Compared to the summer, when air quality reached dangerous levels, this week will be much less severe.

Air quality on Monday remained good to moderate throughout the day. There was no noticeable impact from the smoke, and Tuesday and Wednesday shouldn’t feel much different.

That pales in comparison to the air quality levels reached over the summer, when dozens of people were hospitalized as a result. Air quality alerts were in effect for the entire tri-state area at the time, easily topping 300, which is considered a health advisory where anyone outside without a mask would be affected.

As for summer temperatures, the New York City area will be around 70 degrees, possibly even reaching the 80s on Tuesday, well above normal for this time of year. Additionally, humidity also increases and peaks on Wednesday.

Temperatures will begin to return to normal on Thursday and will return to below 70 degrees on Friday, as rain returns to the region for the first time since the tristate was hit by a deluge last Friday that dumped more five inches in many places.

Temperatures will continue to drop after the rain stops on Saturday or Sunday, as highs could climb back above 50 degrees early next week. But a lot could change between now and then, so stay tuned to Storm Team 4 for the latest forecast details.

After a week of near-perfect weather days, the tri-state area will get a tough welcome at the start of fall. The entire weekend is projected to be soggy, with some getting up to 3 inches of rain as the storms fade. The track The storm could still move slightly before this weekend.

NEW YORK — This weekend will mark the official start of fall, but don’t expect the skies to cooperate with any apple-picking or leaf-peeping plans of the season.

Saturday marks the start of the new season, and enough rain is expected to make it clear: summer is over. Conditions begin to deteriorate Friday night as a storm develops off the southeast coast.

Heavy rain could be more widespread or limited to coastal areas; Flooding is possible. Speaking of coastal areas, they could experience winds of up to 40 mph.

Anyone hoping for an easing of rain over the weekend should prepare for disappointment. The current forecast, which could still change slightly before the weekend, calls for rain throughout Sunday night.

Hurricane Lee Brings Strong Winds and Dangerous Waves to East Coast

Hurricane Lee Brings Strong Winds and Dangerous Waves to East Coast

by Chief editor of world-today-news.com September 15, 2023
written by Chief editor of world-today-news.com

NEW YORK — Hurricane Lee, with its eyes on New England, is likely to be felt up and down the East Coast as the system continues north through the weekend.

Forecasters expect the Category 1 hurricane to pass approximately 250 miles east of Montauk between Friday night and early Saturday. Despite that distance, Lee’s impacts should still be felt by many.

The winds will be one of the main signs that the approaching hurricane is moving away from the coast and approaching landfall in the north. Conditions start to become windier on Friday.

Gusts begin to gradually increase on Friday (25-30 mph) before peaking on Saturday (35-40 mph). The eastern end of Long Island, specifically Montauk, would see the strongest gusts. The National Weather Service says winds will begin to weaken overnight.

Those along the ocean coast will not only see wind spikes as Lee moves across the Atlantic: wave heights could also prove dangerous.

Starting Friday, waves off eastern Long Island could reach heights of 4 to 8 feet. Forecasters predict heights will peak Saturday at between 10 and 16 feet, before falling slightly on Sunday between 9 and 12 feet.

The significant wave heights can cause erosion of dunes and beaches. The following graph shows the main threats throughout this weekend:

Prior to Lee’s coastal passage, large sections of New York City were placed under warning for potentially hazardous beach conditions and coastal flooding.

The New York City Department of Emergency Management said city residents should “remain alert and take preparedness measures,” particularly those in coastal areas. A coastal flood warning has been issued for southern Queens.

In it Thursday agency notice, officials warned of what could be minor flooding in low-lying areas, such as roads and parking lots. They also warned of potentially deadly rip currents until Saturday night on Atlantic-facing beaches.

“While the city’s beaches have closed to swimming for the season, they remain open to surfers, and we recommend caution when entering the water this weekend,” said New York City Parks Commissioner Sue Donoghue. “Despite being some of the strongest swimmers in town, we urge surfers to be aware of the high risk of rip currents as we experience the aftermath of Hurricane Lee.”

NEW YORK — Umbrellas and raincoats will be needed for early travel Wednesday as heavy rain and storms return to the New York area.

Numerous showers and thunderstorms are expected ahead and along a slow-moving cold front as it moves through the area Wednesday morning into the afternoon.

This will bring a threat of isolated or scattered cases of flash flooding and isolated severe weather conditions in the tri-state area.

A flash flood watch is in effect from Tuesday afternoon through Wednesday afternoon in New York, New Jersey and Connecticut.

Daily Rainfall Trend and Flood Watch in Tri-State Area: What You Need to Know

by Chief editor of world-today-news.com September 12, 2023

What you should know

The daily rainfall trend could continue in parts of the tri-state area on Monday, with some rainfall becoming heavy at times. A flood watch is in effect for New York City, as well as neighboring counties in northeastern New Jersey , Long Island, the Hudson Valley and Connecticut into the evening. Cooler weather is expected as fall slowly approaches.

NEW YORK — After a weekend of storms, the daily rain trend could continue in parts of the tri-state area on Monday, with some showers becoming heavy at times.

More rounds of scattered storms are expected overnight, possibly lingering until kickoff of the Jets’ game against Buffalo at MetLife Stadium at 8 p.m. At times, there is a chance for heavy downpours, which could lead to flash flooding .

At the Bills game against the Jets at MetLife Stadium, a shelter-in-place warning was issued around 5:30 p.m. Due to inclement weather, guests are advised to stay in their cars first.

The stadium is now recommending visitors seek shelter in their cars or inside the stadium.

A flood watch is in effect for New York City, as well as neighboring counties in northeastern New Jersey, Long Island, the Hudson Valley and Connecticut. There could be up to 3 inches of rain in locations affected by slow-moving precipitation showers. Some thunder and lightning are possible, although destructive winds are not expected. Urban areas, streams and places with poor drainage are most vulnerable to flooding.

A flash flood warning is in effect for parts of southern Westchester County and eastern Bergen County until 8:45 p.m.

By 6 pm, thunderstorms were moving through Hudson County.

Storms are expected to last until 9 p.m.

There will also be some showers and storms on Tuesday. Basically, the pattern remains unsettled with chances for afternoon and evening storms into Wednesday before we finally get a strong enough front to move through and clear things up. The front clears Wednesday, and after the showers and storms that should end early, humidity should begin to drop quickly and skies will clear.

It will be cooler and drier/comfortable starting Thursday. But then our attention turns to Hurricane Lee in the Atlantic. As of Monday, it appears the storm will remain far enough to the east to have minimal impacts on the tri-state area, although the New England coast could be buffeted by the edge of the storm.

What Lee, a Category 3 hurricane, will do in the New York area is keep things dry and breezy for several days, assuming it maintains its current track. It could bring some waves and rough surf to those along the coast, with maximum impacts expected from late Friday afternoon into early Saturday.

What is the forecast for the next 10 days?

Basically, the pattern remains unsettled with chances for afternoon and evening storms into Wednesday before we finally get a strong enough front to move through and clear things up.

It will be cooler and drier/comfortable starting Thursday.
