Austin Cuts Ties withโ Homelessโ Shelter operator Urban alchemy Over data Misreporting
Austin, TX – โฃ The City of Austinโค is ending its contract โwithโข Urban Alchemy, the nonprofit operating two keyโฃ downtownโค emergency shelters, following revelations that five employees falsified records related to individuals experiencing โฃhomelessness. The decision, announced today by โDavid โGray, Director of Austin’s Homeless Strategy Office, will see a transition in shelterโ management byโ theโค end of September.
Urban Alchemy has managed the Austin Resource Center for the โฃhomeless (ARCH) since 2022,โค taking over after the city ended a previous agreement. They were also selected to operate theโ Eighth Street โshelter when itโ reopened in 2023.
The issue centers around โmisrepresented exit dates and other data points โคwithin the city’s Homeless Management Information Systemโ (HMIS). This system is crucial for trackingโ individuals’ progress toward permanent housing andโ evaluating the effectiveness of city-funded programs.
“Having accurate dataโฃ is significant bothโ for the public toโ beโ able to know whichโค programs โare producing high results, where โฃwe are getting strong returns on investment for our taxpayer dollars, but โขalso important for allโฃ the service providers in the system too,” Gray explained.
While acknowledging โคUrban alchemy’s positive contributions – including providing medical โcare, food, and โsafe shelter – Gray โstated the data integrity breach wasโ “not excusable.”
Urban alchemy confirmed the discrepancies,โค stating they discovered โthe issue through internal controls and promptly terminated the โresponsible employees. “We notified the City after โour internal controls โdiscovered โthe issue and terminated the employees that we identified as responsible,” a spokesperson said in a written statement.โ “We hold our entire team to the highest possible standards, and will โnever hesitate to โฃtake appropriate action when weโ fall short of โฃthose standards.” The nonprofit has since corrected the data and will submit a review of misreported records in their next quarterly report.
To ensure uninterrupted service at theโ ARCH and Eighth Street Shelter, โthe โAustin City Council is scheduled to approve a โขone-year emergency contract with Endeavors at its October 9th meeting. Endeavors โcurrently operates the Marshalling Yard and Northbridgeโค Shelters, both of whichโข have demonstrated positiveโข outcomes โin โฃassistingโ individuals experiencing homelessness.
