Nextโ year โคmarks โขthe 30thโค anniversary of That Thing You Do!, Tom โขHanks’ charming directorial debut. โThe โfilm, a nostalgic romp through the early โข1960s music scene, launched the fictionalโค band The โWonders to (mock) stardom on the back of its infectious โtitle track. โขBut behind theโค scenes, a fascinating songwriting competition unfolded, attracting aโ who’s who of choice and power-pop luminaries.โข Now, with a โdeluxe reissue of the soundtrack on the horizon, the stories behind the songs that didn’t make the cut are finallyโค being revealed.
The title song, penned โby Fountains โฃof Wayne’s โAdam Schlesinger,โฃ perfectly encapsulates the era โคin just โขtwo minutesโฃ and 43 seconds. But Hanks wasn’t settling for just one option. He initiated a broad search, inviting a diverse range of artists to submit their take on the โfilm’s musical heart. โHere’s a look at the “lost” โsongs and the stories behind them:
Marshall Crenshaw – โฃ”All I Ever Wanted”
Known for his meticulous craftsmanship and knack for retro sounds, โคCrenshaw was a natural fit. He initially offered a co-write with Kirsty MacColl,โค but a lyric referencing a hangover proved a stumbling block. โฃA revisedโ demo didn’t โคquite hit โขthe mark, according to Crenshaw, though he remainsโข a respected figure in power-pop.
The Posies – “Ask Anybody”
Jon Auer of The Posies recalls a frantic scramble to deliverโค a song while on tour in Europe. While the band crafted โa โคsolid โขtrack, Auer admitsโข it lacked the specific spark the film needed. “It didn’t โcome close to capturingโ the spirit of the โขmovie,” he says, andโ the song remains unreleased.
XTC – “My Train is Coming”
Andy Partridge, the genius behind XTC and his alter-ego Dukes of Stratosphear, already had a songโ in the canโ – “My Train is Coming” – originallyโ written for the film Buster.โ He re-recorded itโค for That Thing You Do!,and it eventually found aโ home on the Blu-ray reissue of XTC’s Oranges & Lemons.
