Bangkok – The 2025 SEA Games will relocate competition for 10 sports from Songkhla to Bangkok due to severe flooding in Thailand.football is among the affected disciplines.
As of Wednesday, November 26th, at least 33 people have died consequently of floods impacting nine provinces in southern Thailand, prompting the evacuation of tens of thousands of residents.Songkhla, originally slated as a primary SEA Games venue alongside Chonburi and Bangkok, has been significantly affected.
A meeting convened on Wednesday between 2025 SEA Games Committee chair Chaiyapak Siriwat, Minister of Tourism Atthakorn Sirilatthayakorn, and representatives from participating countries resulted in the decision to move all Songkhla-based events to Bangkok, according to the Bangkok Post.
Concerns over the floodwaters’ potential to recede in time, the uncertain condition of venues post-flood, and the risk of disease spread contributed to the relocation. Affected sports are now seeking suitable venues within Bangkok. The Thai government is considering compensation for participating countries that have already made travel and accommodation arrangements for Songkhla.
The 10 sports initially scheduled for songkhla are boxing, pencak silat, football, judo, chess, kabaddi, karate, wrestling, petanque, and wushu – representing a total of 109 gold medals.
