Josh Freese Returns to nine Inch Nails, Departs Foo Fighters
Drummer Josh Freese has rejoined Nine inch Nails, concluding his tenure with Foo Fighters after two years. Freese, who has a prolific career drumming for numerous artists including Paramore, Angels & Airwaves, and Danny Elfman, announced his departure from Foo Fighters in May, citing the bandS decision to “go in a different direction with their drummer.” He expressed surprise and disappointment, noting it was the first time he had been let go from a band, but affirmed his continued freelance work.
Foo fighters brought Freese on board in 2023 as the successor to their late drummer Taylor Hawkins. The band released their first track since Freese’s departure, “Today’s Song,” this month, acknowledging his contribution and stating that their “story would be incomplete” without his “thunderous wizardry.” Their 2023 album, But Here We Are, followed Medicine at Midnight, which won the Best Rock Album Grammy shortly after Hawkins’ passing.
A Hollywood Reporter source indicated that Freese had committed to Nine Inch Nails for the year but informed Trent Reznor last week that he had “accepted a job with another band.”
Freese shared his thoughts on the transition via Instagram:
Leaving Nine Inch Nails at the end of 2008 was one of the hardest decisions I’ve ever had to make.My wife and I were expecting our third child, and I knew I needed to step away from life on the road to be home with my family.
NIN was a band that left me walking off stage every single night thinking, “That was incredible. We absolutely crushed it.” And it wasn’t just a feeling, it was a certainty. That level of intensity, pride, and satisfaction after each show is something I’ve rarely experienced anywhere else.
Now, being back on tour with Trent and the crew-helping them do what they do best night after night-is something I’m incredibly excited about. to be part of that energy again feels amazing.
If you get a chance to catch one of these shows over the next six weeks, I promise, they’re going to be absolutely unforgettable.
Hope to see you out there.
