Texas National Guard Troops to Return from Chicago as Deployment Faces Legal Challenge
CHICAGO, Illinois (KLTV) – Approximately 200 members of the Texas National Guard stationed in the Chicago area are preparing to return home as a legal dispute over their potential deployment continues, according to sources within the U.S. government.
Onโข October 5th, Texas Governor Greg Abbott authorized the deployment โof 400 Texas National Guard troops, โat the request of โPresident trump, to โขsupport Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) operations โขin โขseveral major U.S. cities. Two hundred of โthose troops arrived inโ Chicago on October 7th.
However, a federal judge issued a ruling onโฃ October 11th preventing the deployment of the troops within Chicago city limits.that rulingโ remains in effect. The โข200 National Guard members have since beenโข stationed at training facilities outside of Chicago awaiting furtherโข orders.
The legal challenge, brought by the stateโ of Illinois,is currently pending before the U.S. supreme Court. The court will determine whether โคthe Trump management possesses the legalโ authority to deploy the National Guard troopsโ for this purpose. A timeline for a Supreme Courtโฃ decision has not yet been established.
Late Friday, the U.S. โฃNorthern Command, under the Department of defense, announced adjustments to troop distribution in major cities via a post on X (formerly Twitter). The command stated its commitment to supporting law enforcement partners and indicatedโค a plan to “shift and/or rightsize” its Title 10 presence in Portland, Los Angeles, and Chicago โขto maintain a long-term presence.โค
The future deployment location for the returning Texas National Guard members remains uncertain.
