Texas A&M Reaches โ$1 Million Settlementโ wiht Former President Mark Welsh
COLLEGE STATION, TX -โ Texas A&M University officialsโ authorized a $1 million โคsettlement with former President Mark Welsh, contingent on his resignation and a mutualโ agreement to refrain from publicโค criticism, according to a settlement agreement โreviewed by The Texas Tribune. Welsh submitted his resignation โขon September 18th, just weeks after the resolution ofโ a separateโ controversy involving a botched presidential search.
The agreement concludesโ aโฃ period of instability for the university following the contentious hiring process that initially selected Kathleen McElroy asโค the sole finalist for the position of director of the School of Journalism. The regents ultimately declined to hire McElroy, leading to public outcry and questions about the influence of outside political pressure. This latest growth raises further questions about leadershipโ and openness within the A&M System.
According to the settlement, both Texas A&Mโ and Welsh are to avoid making “negativeโฃ or โcritical statements” about the other party. Welsh’s original contract stipulated โhis tenure would โขcontinue until December 12, 2028.
A&M System chancellor Glennโ Hegar confirmed receiving Welsh’s resignation letter โand โขdeclined toโ elaborate on the reasons behind the search for a new president,โ stating, “that’s not something for today.” He affirmed the system’s commitment โฃto finding the “best person” to lead โคtheโ institution.
Regents chair Albritton recently praised Welsh for stabilizingโ the university after the McElroy โคsituation, noting his ability to “calm the waters.” Albritton acknowledged โคthe need to determine the university’s future direction following Welsh’s leadership.
