SPRINGFIELD, Tenn. (AP) – A community near Springfield, Tennessee, is mourning theโค 16 people killedโฃ in Thursday’s explosion atโ aโค Westmoreland chemical plant. The blast atโข the Vulcanโฃ Materials Company facility sent shockwaves โthrough Robertson County, prompting a massive emergency response and leavingโข residents reeling.Authorities have โnot yet released the names of all โขthe victims, but โคRobertson County Emergency โManagement โฃAgency spokesperson Ashley McDonald confirmed the death toll Friday morning. The cause of the explosion remains under investigation, but officialsโ said it involved a propane tank.
“It’sโข a โฃdevastating loss for โคour community,” said Springfield Mayor Annabelle Suddarth. “These were hard-working individuals, neighbors, friends, and family members. Our hearts goโ out to everyone affected by this tragedy.”
the Vulcan Materials Company plant produces asphalt and other construction materials. The โexplosion occurred around 10:30 a.m. local time, and the resulting fire took several hours to contain. Multiple agencies responded, including local fire departments, law enforcement, and hazardous materials teams.
residentsโ described hearingโ a loud boom andโฃ feeling the groundโ shake. Someโข reported debris falling from the sky. The impact ofโข the blast damaged nearby homes and businesses.
“It sounded like aโ bomb went off,” said resident โขBrenda Harris, who lives about a mile โขfromโ the plant. “The whole house shook. I ran outside and saw aโฃ huge plume of smoke.”
The Tennessee Emergency Management Agency is assisting with theโข investigation and providing support to โฃlocal officials. The National Transportationโ Safety Board has dispatched โa team to investigate the causeโ of theโข explosion.
this is not the first incident โคat the Vulcan โขmaterials Company facility. In 2018, the plant was cited by the Occupational Safetyโข and Health Governance (OSHA) for safety violations.
