The weather will continue to be summery and even hot this week. The record for the hottest days in Finland’s measurement history may be broken.
– The weather in Finland for the coming days will generally be warm and sunny, although there may be a rainy day in between – on Friday, a rain zone will move over Finland. Every day this week, it is possible that the temperature limit will be exceeded locally somewhere in Finland, Joanna Rinne, the meteorologist on duty, says in Foreca’s weather blog.
He predicts that temperatures will be around 20–24 degrees across a wide area.
This summer there have been a total of 59 hot days, which is the fourth highest number of hot days in the statistics of the Finnish Meteorological Institute, which maintains weather statistics since 1961.
The record for hot days is from 2002, when at least one official observation station measured temperatures over 25 degrees on 65 days. Also in 2018 and 2006, there were more hot days than this year. In 2018, there were 64 hot days and there were 61 in 2006.
This year there were as many as 16 hot days in May, 14 in June and 20 in July. There have been nine hot days in August so far.
Records were broken at Utsjoki
The most hot days have been measured at the Utsjoki Kevo observation station, eight. According to the Finnish Meteorological Institute, this is a record, as a maximum of six hot days were previously measured at the observation station in 1996.
The hot day record for the entire year is also held by Kevo station with 25 days. The previous record is 21 days from 1972.

In the north of Finland, a high pressure area has occasionally affected during August, which has reduced the amount of rain reaching northern Lapland even when there has been rain in other parts of Finland.
– The Utsjoki Kevo weather observation station is located in a river valley, and on warm days the area of the observation station can often get warmer than other weather observation stations in Northern Lapland, Rinne says.
So far, the highest temperature of the year has been measured in Heinola and Kuopio on June 28, when the meter read 31.4 degrees. The highest temperature in August has been 28.4 degrees in Utsjoki.
