Telangana’s Tele-MANAS Helpline Addresses Growing Mental Health Needs, Exceeding 1.38 lakh Calls Since Inception
Hyderabad, Telangana – Launched in october 2022, the Tele-MANAS helpline in Telangana has become a critical resource for mental health support, receiving over 1.38 lakh calls from individuals across the state grappling with a spectrum of concerns, from anxiety and depression to substance use, sleep disturbances, and suicidal ideation. The round-the-clock service, operated from the Institute of Mental Health (IMH) in Erragadda, provides immediate, confidential, and free assistance to anyone with access to a phone.
The initiative, part of a national program, has demonstrated meaningful reach, with the call center staffed by a dedicated team of two psychiatrists, one clinical psychologist, 14 trained counselors, two technical coordinators, and two support staff. On a daily basis, the center manages between 150 to 200 calls, offering initial support and referring individuals with more severe conditions to local District Mental Health Program (DMHP) clinics or government hospitals.
The impact of Tele-MANAS is evident across all 33 districts of Telangana. Kamareddy district has reported the highest volume of calls, with 19,366 individuals reaching out for support. Hyderabad follows with 9,904 calls, while Hanamkonda (8,086), Siddipet (7,911), and Vikarabad (7,067) also show ample engagement with the service.
According to Tele-MANAS officials, the primary callers are often young adults, individuals experiencing unemployment, and those facing sudden medical or financial challenges. A common theme among callers is a sense of isolation and difficulty in openly discussing their mental health struggles with family members. The anonymity and accessibility offered by the helpline are highlighted as crucial factors in enabling these individuals to seek help.
One counselor shared an instance where a caller, initially hesitant, was transferred to a psychiatrist. Following a confidential assessment for suicidal ideation and education on the mind-body connection, the individual agreed to seek further care at the District Hospital. A follow-up session confirmed the caller was already experiencing enhancement, underscoring the helpline’s effectiveness in facilitating access to professional mental health services.
The Tele-MANAS helpline continues to serve as a vital lifeline, addressing a significant need for accessible and confidential mental health support in Telangana.
