Google’s Project Tuscany: Next-Gen Face Recognition for Pixel & Chromebooks

Google is developing an advanced facial recognition system, dubbed “Project Toscana,” for future Pixel smartphones and Chromebooks, aiming to rival Apple’s Face ID in speed and security. The initiative, revealed through testing with UX designers in Mountain View, California, represents Google’s latest attempt to deliver a robust face unlock feature to its devices.

According to an anonymous source who participated in the testing, Project Toscana utilizes advanced technology – likely infrared, though unconfirmed – to map facial features with greater precision than current Pixel face unlock capabilities. Tests were conducted under a variety of lighting conditions, and the system reportedly performed as quickly as Apple’s Face ID. The testing involved a Pixel phone with a single hole-punch camera and two Chromebooks equipped with external, prototype cameras.

Google’s previous forays into face unlock technology have faced challenges. The 2019 Pixel 4’s face unlock feature launched shortly before the widespread adoption of face masks due to the COVID-19 pandemic, diminishing its practicality. More recent Pixel iterations have included face unlock, but with limitations regarding compatibility with secure applications. Project Toscana represents a more ambitious, hardware-focused upgrade intended to overcome these previous shortcomings.

The development of Project Toscana signals a renewed commitment from Google to biometric authentication. The system is expected to employ 3D scanning technology to accurately map facial features and differentiate between a live person and a photograph or video, a crucial element in preventing fraud and safeguarding user data. This focus on security is intended to address a key differentiator between Google’s face unlock and Apple’s Face ID, which is widely considered a benchmark for secure biometric authentication.

While specific technical details remain undisclosed, Google intends to leverage advancements in artificial intelligence to ensure rapid and secure user identification. The potential benefits for consumers include a more convenient and secure way to access devices, make payments, and authorize applications. The system aims to provide fast and accurate authentication even with changes in lighting or a user’s appearance, such as wearing glasses or a hat.

Testing of Project Toscana is ongoing, and the timeline for its integration into Pixel and Chromebook devices remains unclear. Google has not yet commented publicly on the project.
