Dylan van Baarle and Matteo Jorgenson are the spearheads of Visma | Lease a Bike in the Tour of Flanders. The Dutch champion and winner of Dwars door Vlaanderen takes over that role from Wout van Aert, who is not there after his hard fall in DDV. Jan Tratnik is not there.

There were some doubts about Van Baarle’s participation after he fell ill, but the Dutchman has fully recovered. He announced this himself on Thursday via a playful post Strava. “Test, test, check,” was his caption for his training on the popular training app. Tratnik, on the other hand, did not get fit in time for the Tour. The Slovenian crashed in Ghent-Wevelgem. He did get to the start in Dwars door Vlaanderen, but soon had to give up.

Van Baarle will be at the start of the second monument of the season together with Jorgenson, but also with Tiesj Benoot, Per Strand Hagenes, Tim van Dijke, Mick van Dijke and Edoardo Affini. After his nose fracture, Hagenes was initially scheduled for the Volta NXT Classic, but will skip that race and still compete in the RVV.

Jonas Vingegaard Wins Fourth and Final Stage of O Gran Camiño – Bad Weather Shortens Race – Full Race Recap

Jonas Vingegaard has also won the fourth and final stage of O Gran Camiño. The Dane of Visma | Lease a Bike also won the other two stages in line earlier this week and is therefore logically the overall winner.

Bad weather conditions continue to plague O Gran Camiño. After the neutralization of the time trial, this fourth and final stage also had to be shortened. The riders therefore did not have to climb the Alto de San Xiao. After the top of the Alto de San Xiao, the riders should take a descent that is not too wide. Due to the rain and wind, the organization subsequently decided not to take this risk.

So after the Alto de San Cosme, the peloton had to immediately drive towards the final climb, Monte Aloia. That is the same climb as the Alto de San Xiao, only now they rode to the top and the ride ends there.

The American all-rounder Neilson Powless (EF Education-EasyPost), who disappointed earlier this week and thus lost a good ranking in the general classification, lit the fuse early in the race. On the first climb of the day, the Alto Cruceiro do Monte, he went out for the first time with Javier Romo (Movistar) and Wilco Kelderman (Visma | Lease a Bike). However, that party did not take place, so Powless continued his efforts on his own.

Decision on final climb
A six-team with Eric Antonio Fagundez (Burgos BH), Asier Etxeberria (Euskaltel-Euskadi), Joaquim Silva and Pedro Pinto (Efapel Cycling), Rafael Reis (Team Sabgal/Anicolor) and Walter Calzoni (Q36.5 Pro Cycling) was then reported the counterattack. A little later they also closed the gap and were allowed by the Visma | riders Lease a Bike takes about four minutes to drive away.

In the final the rain became even more frequent, which meant that match images and information were largely missing. In the run-up to the final climb, only Calzoni, Silva and Fagundez remained at the front, but Visma | Lease a Bike corrected the crooked situation. In the last three kilometers all the escapees were swallowed up and Vingegaard left himself on the attack. Lenny Martinez could no longer bridge the gap, but he didn’t do a bad job. After all, he took over the youth jersey from Cian Uijtdebroeks.

Silva, Fagundez

Jumbo-Visma, from January 1 Visma | Lease a Bike says goodbye to cyclist Lennard Hofstede. The 29-year-old driver has decided to end his professional cycling career. “I had felt it coming for a while,” the Dutchman said in a press release.

“To be clear, this is not a difficult or unpleasant decision. I’ve felt it coming for a while. I have not been completely fit lately and I have gradually lost the pleasure of competing,” says Hofstede. “And that is the essence of my professional cycling life.”

“That is why this decision feels good and I am especially grateful for the many wonderful experiences I have had here. I actually stop with a smile. And at the same time I will support the entire Team Visma | Lease a Bike family also miss it. They were very beautiful and intense years together.”

Hofstede took his first steps with the training team of (then) Rabobank, moved to Team Sunweb after a few seasons, but returned to the old nest at the end of 2018. Hofstede grew into a reliable and valued helper: he played an important role in Primoz Roglic’s Vuelta victory in 2020. The last two years have been more difficult due to physical discomfort.

Zeeman: “We will certainly miss Lennard”
Sporting director Merijn Zeeman speaks highly of Hofstede. “We will certainly miss Lennard. He was always valuable. It’s also brave of him to make that decision. He can be proud of his career and so are we. We wish Lennard all the best in his future life.”

Jumbo-Visma Sports Director Jan Boven on Cross Victories: “A Different Fem” and “Not Panicking” After Second Place Finishes

Interview A satisfied sports director Jan Boven saw his two Jumbo-Visma groups cheering in the Superprestigecross of Heusden-Zolder. However, both Wout van Aert and Fem van Empel did not have the ideal run-up to the Limburg cross. Bee CyclingFlits Above provides text and explanation.

Winning is not new for Jumbo-Visma, but what do those cross victories mean in their story? “A lot. Every victory is nice to take away. It is almost considered normal that they both win here,” coach Boven says full of praise. “It is not the first time that we have won twice in one day in cross-country. Wout and Fem have done that before, I think Wout and Marianne Vos have too. But it is very beautiful.”

Van Empel’s winning streak
Van Empel saw her streak of 11 consecutive victories broken on Tuesday in Gavere. But according to Boven, that was not the biggest problem. “Don’t underestimate her falls. Her knee was hit hard, and she was also quite ill. She was barely able to train for two weeks. As an athlete you will not gain any extra self-confidence there. Gavere was also not a nice course to get into, with all those descents. It was very good that she came second.”

Van Aert completed it again in Zolder – photo: Cor Vos

“But in Zolder it was immediately clear to me that we would see a different Fem. After just one lap, she said: today is really my course. The confidence was immediately restored. After a difficult period, she can show again: I can do this after all. Although of course her winning streak had to be stopped at some point. If it hadn’t happened yesterday, it would have happened some other time.”

Van Aert vs. Van der Poel
For Van Aert, it was one of the few times in Zolder that he did not have to compete against world champion Van der Poel. “His level is just good. But Mathieu is superior,” the team leader takes stock. “We know where we stand, and that the fight with Mathieu is a difficult one. But it doesn’t mean it doesn’t have to be a fight. Only, the times they rode together, it was clear that unfortunately it was not a fight.”

Boven continues to believe that the three-time world champion will be able to offer more resistance. “How do we evaluate this now? Not. This was all taken into account. Everything is part of a bigger plan, and we will continue to stick to that. It is not because we came second a few times in the cross country that we now panic and think: oh no, we have to do a number of things differently.”

Tiesj Benoot Stands up for New Teammate Cian Uijtdebroeks Amid Transfer Controversy

Tiesj Benoot has stood up for his new teammate Cian Uijtdebroeks. During the team presentation of Visma | Lease a Bike, the young classification rider was already present and not much later the news came that all parties had agreed on the transfer of Uijtdebroeks. Benoot saw the transfer soap from the sidelines and wanted to say something about it: “He has a lot to deal with.”

“I would especially like to appeal to the press to tackle him less,” said Benoot Sporza. “He is 20 years old and he has a lot to deal with. You don’t want to read what a young rider has to deal with on social media. We often talk about mental well-being, but that is forgotten here. I hope it doesn’t bother him too much.”

The situation now seems to be over now that the camp-Uijtdebroeks, BORA-hansgrohe and Visma | Lease a Bike have reached an agreement on the transition. The UCI has now also given official approval for the transfer of Uijtdebroeks as of January 1, 2024.

Benoot had already met his compatriot at a training camp and is looking forward to working together in the coming season, although the two will not race together much. “As a young rider, he is with the best team to develop. He has received a warm welcome here,” said Benoot.
