Olav Kooij won his first stage in a grand tour in the Giro d’Italia on Sunday, achieving a unique performance for someone his age. The barely 22-year-old Kooij became the youngest sprint winner in the Giro d’Italia since sprint legend Mario Cipollini.

The latter won his first of a total of 42 stage victories in the Giro in 1989, when he won the twelfth stage in Mira ahead of José Rodriguez and Jean-Paul van Poppel. Jonathan Milan also won his first bunch sprint in the Giro a year ago at a similar age.

And this achievement is also quite unique for a Dutch person. It had been since 1999 – when Jeroen Blijlevens won two stages – since a compatriot had won a bunch sprint in the Giro. Previously, Jean-Paul van Poppel and Gerben Karstens were also successful in a sprint stage.

In addition, Kooij also became the youngest Dutch stage winner in the Giro ever. In that respect, he is faster than men like Michel Stolker in 1956 and Erik Breukink in 1987.

“I was a bit afraid of the time trial beforehand. Especially because there was such a long flat section at the beginning of the time trial. In the past that was something where I lost a lot of time,” said the Visma | rider Lease a Bike. “I am happy with the time trial I rode. I was able to limit the damage.”

Uijtdebroeks drops to seventh place in the general classification after the time trial. “But the difference between the top 3 and top 5 is not that big. So it was a good day. It doesn’t matter that I lost the white jersey. Luke Plapp (the new leader in the youth classification, ed.) is in principle not someone who is very good in the high mountains.”

“I was able to ride well from the front throughout the entire race,” said Van Empel. “I tried to pick out the points that I didn’t master very well in the Amstel Gold Race. At the end I was maybe a little too far to go with the best, but I didn’t cross the finish line with any regrets.”

Van Empel crossed the line eighth, 24 seconds behind winner Kasia Niewiadoma. A top ten on her debut. “This is very special. I surprised myself a bit, so I’m proud. This certainly makes me want to do more, but now I won’t be doing much for a week. Then we will look at how we can further flesh out the program.”

Does Van Empel already have an idea what the next goal could be? “Maybe choose a nice stage somewhere in a big tour, but what I said: it is a matter of discussing with the team which path we are going to take.”

Tim van Dijke, Mick van Dijke and Per Strand Hagenes colored the course on behalf of the yellow-blacks. “We have really worked towards this,” said 24-year-old Tim van Dijke. “I was a bit nervous yesterday because I know I’m fine. But there are also many things that happen in races like Paris-Roubaix that you have no influence on, such as punctures. Everything really has to be right on a day like today.”

Afterwards, De Zeeuw was happy, but also critical of himself. “This is very nice, but we also made a lot of bad decisions. That is also a bit of inexperience,” he admits. “These are great learning situations that you find yourself in. And in the end I attacked until the sprinters let me ride.”

Tim calls his eighth place, almost five minutes after winner Mathieu van der Poel, a boost. “This is the highest level in the world, so top 10 is a great step towards the future for me. I don’t have to hide the fact that the Tour of Flanders and Paris-Roubaix are my favorite races, and I want to win them too. The future will tell whether I will be good enough. Today there was no more than eighth place.”

Mick van Dijke: “I am speechless”
Twin brother Mick van Dijke was Visma |’s second in command Lease a Bike in the results, in nineteenth place. “We did great. I’m still speechless about it,” said Mick, who was also in a group with Van der Poel, Philipsen and Pedersen in the preliminary finals. “Then I had to stay calm, but everything came back. Video Visma | Lease a Bike has to make do without Wout van Aert in the Tour of Flanders. The intended leader had a hard fall four days ago, in Dwars door Vlaanderen, breaking several bones. A hard blow for Van Aert, but his team manager Richard Plugge left before the Tour of Flanders CyclingFlits know that the Belgian is already looking ahead.

The new edition of RIDE Magazine is now available! Our new 188-page spring edition is full of wonderful cycling stories about Mathieu van der Poel, Lotte Kopecky, Demi Vollering, Sepp Kuss and Matej Mohoric. Insure your copy and order it online now for only €9.95. Would you like to receive RIDE extra cheaply? Then take out a subscription now and receive a 20% discount!

“I visited him in the hospital on Friday and we had telephone contact yesterday,” Plugge said. “He is now back home and considering the circumstances, he is doing well, as you say. But of course it was a terrible fall.”

The fall was a huge blow for Van Aert, not only physically, but also mentally, Plugge confirms. “Everything was about today and next week (Paris-Roubaix, ed.). We have to make new plans now, once he has recovered. That is the priority now. We have to work together to ensure that he can recover well. It looks like everything will turn out well, but we need to recalibrate.”

“He’s jumping”
Van Aert makes a resilient impression, says Plugge. “He is already looking forward to the moment when he can get back on track and train for the next competitions. Mentally he is in good shape. It is up to everyone that we do this at the right time and in the right way. He’s jumping.”

“Has he already put the Tour of Flanders and Paris-Roubaix aside and is looking ahead to next summer? It’s not that far yet. For the time being, he really needs to recover, he is well aware of that. We must first give that a chance. Only then can we make plans. But he really wants it again, so that’s very nice. His resilience is one of his strongest points. That will make him come back even stronger.”

Plan
Plugge cannot yet say too much about Van Aert’s program and the plans surrounding it. “We really have to look at that later. It just happened, he just got back from the hospital. We have to see how long it takes him to recover. We have no idea about that yet. We really need to let this take one or two weeks before we can make a plan for it. That is really not possible at the moment.”
