Tokyo, Japan – A tsunami advisory issued for much of Japan’s Pacific coastline following a recent earthquake has sparked renewed interest in a 2021 online post by manga artist Tatsuki, known for his work exploring precognitive dreams. The earthquake, which occurred on March 20, 2024, prompted alerts across the region, wiht observed tsunami heights reaching 1.3 meters at Guji Port in Iwate Prefecture, 80 centimeters in Nemuro, Hokkaido, and 60 centimeters in Hamanaka.
The Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) initially issued the advisory after the earthquake, which had a magnitude of 5.3 and was centered approximately 60 kilometers (37 miles) off the coast of Fukushima prefecture at a depth of 40 kilometers (25 miles). the JMA subsequently downgraded the alert as wave activity subsided, lifting advisories for several areas throughout the evening.
following news coverage of the earthquake and tsunami advisory, Tatsuki’s 2021 post began circulating widely on Japanese social media platforms. The post details a dream in which Tatsuki envisioned “water rising in the southern Pacific Sea of Japan.” This led to a flurry of online discussion, with some users suggesting the artist had predicted the recent event.
Social media responses ranged from speculation about Tatsuki’s apparent foresight – with some suggesting the dream could foreshadow further seismic activity, including volcanic eruptions – to accusations of “fitting expression,” or selectively interpreting the post to align with current events. Critics pointed out that Tatsuki’s original post also referenced a “massive volcanic eruption in the Philippines” and a tsunami “three times the size of the Great East Japan Earthquake,” details not reflected in the recent event.
The Great East Japan Earthquake, also known as the Tohoku earthquake, occurred on March 11, 2011, and generated a devastating tsunami that caused widespread destruction and loss of life. The 2011 tsunami reached heights of over 40 meters (130 feet) in some areas.
The JMA continues to monitor seismic activity in the region and urges residents to remain vigilant and heed official warnings. The agency provides real-time earthquake facts and tsunami advisories on its website: https://www.jma.go.jp/jma/indexe.html
